Lemon Biscuits

Days passed, and the silent tension between Garreth and me lingered on. We continued to exchange only the necessary words, barely acknowledging each other's presence. It weighed heavily on my heart, a constant reminder of the fracture in our friendship.

Meanwhile, my shoulder had healed, and the incident with the broom flying had been brushed aside as a harmless accident. Natty, on the other hand, found herself under closer scrutiny from her mother, who was concerned about her visions and their potential dangers. She, too, carried the weight of our shared secret, and it added to the strain we all felt.

One evening, after another day of detention, I found myself staying longer in the bustling Hogwarts kitchen. The house elves welcomed me with warm smiles and eager anticipation to stay longer, aware that I had something special in store for them. With their help, I baked a fresh batch of biscuits, carefully crafted to perfection. I made an extra bunch for the house elves because they liked them while making them.

As I wrapped the biscuits in a small, decorative box, I couldn't help but feel a mix of nervousness and hope. Would this gesture be enough or was it just silly of me to think that a box of biscuits could fix something?

With the box in hand, I made my way to the library, seeking solace among the rows of books. As much as I wanted to go straight to Garreth I first had to finish some homework I was putting aside. In the library, I spotted Ominis, engrossed in his reading, his wand gliding over the parchment pages.

Taking a deep breath, I approached him. "May I join you, Ominis?"

He looked up, a warm smile gracing his face. "Of course, Laura. Please, have a seat."

I settled down next to him, placing the box of biscuits on the table. Ominis's curiosity was piqued as the sweet aroma filled the air.

"It smells like biscuits," he commented, raising an eyebrow.

A faint blush colored my cheeks as I explained, "I made some for Garreth. As an apology. I hope it can convey how sorry I am for my behavior."

Ominis nodded understandingly. "That's a thoughtful gesture, Laura. I'm sure he will appreciate it."

I couldn't help but feel a sense of comfort in Ominis's presence. He had always been a friendly and polite person since we met. He never had a bad word for someone, only when it directly affected him or his close friends. He always had this calm presence around him. We spent the next hour immersed in our respective studies. As I flipped through the pages of my assigned reading, I couldn't help but steal glances at the box of biscuits. Each passing minute felt like an eternity, and the weight of the unresolved conflict with Garreth pressed upon me.

"You know, Laura," Ominis began, his voice soft and reassuring, "sometimes it takes time for wounds to heal, both physical and emotional. It's natural for relationships to go through ups and downs."

I nodded, appreciating his words of wisdom. "I know, Ominis. It's just... I never intended to hurt Garreth. I didn't realize how much my actions would affect him."

"Sometimes we can be so focused on our desires and pursuits that we forget to consider the feelings of others," Ominis said gently. "But the important thing is that you recognize your mistake and are willing to make amends."

I sighed, feeling a mixture of regret and determination. "I just hope Garreth will be willing to listen and understand. I want to explain everything to him and apologize properly."

I opened the box for a small second and took out two biscuits. I gave one to Ominis. The aroma filled the air, catching Ominis's attention once again.

"You put a lot of effort into these, didn't you?" he remarked and took the biscuit before he took a bite.

I smiled, feeling a sense of pride. "I did, he likes these with a hint of lemon."

Ominis chuckled. "I'm sure he'll appreciate the gesture. Food has a way of mending fences and bringing people together. They are delicious by the way."

We spent another hour studying and chatting, the tension gradually dissipating. Ominis shared fascinating insights from his History of Magic book, and I found myself engrossed in the stories he recounted.

Just as I was about to give in to impatience about my homework, a familiar walked passed the bookshelves. Garreth's eyes swept across the shelves, and our gazes locked for a fleeting moment before he averted his eyes and continued his search for a place to study.

A mix of anxiety and determination surged through me. With a deep breath, I gathered my belongings "Garreth just passed. I'll give him the box now." I said to Ominis.

"Good luck," he answered with a smile on his face.

"Thanks, Ominis. For listening."

I followed Garreth to his table where he had placed himself with a few books. His facial expression was tense and concentrated. I took a deep breath, and my heart beat faster with excitement "Garreth, may I speak with you for a moment?"

He looked up, surprise flickering across his face. After a brief hesitation, he nodded and gestured for me to sit beside him.

"Garreth, I... I made these for you." I offered the box of biscuits, my voice barely above a whisper. "They're... they're an apology. I know I haven't been considerate of your feelings lately, and I'm truly sorry for that. It wasn't my intention to hurt you or disregard your emotions. I realize now that I should have included you in my decision-making and communicated better. You've been nothing but supportive, and I value your friendship more than I can express. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me."

He regarded me for a moment, his eyes softening ever so slightly. After a pause, he reached out and accepted the box, his fingertips brushing against mine in a gentle, fleeting touch. His voice, filled with a delicate vulnerability, escaped his lips, "Thank you, Laura. I... I appreciate the gesture."

A blush crept up my cheeks, and I could feel the heat of embarrassment rising within me. Yet, beneath the embarrassment, there was a profound happiness; a sense of relief that washed over me like a warm, comforting wave. It was as if a weight had been lifted, and I could not help but offer him a shy smile.

"I'll leave you to your studies then," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper, feeling a mixture of shyness and exhilaration. "Just know that I'm here if you ever want to talk... about anything."

With those words, I turned to leave, my heart fluttering like a captive bird set free. As I made my way out of the library, I could not resist stealing a glance over my shoulder, catching Garreth's eyes fixed upon me, a flicker of something in his eyes—a mix of gratitude, uncertainty, and a glimmer of forgiveness.
