"Shadyside's, small town America. But among locals, a history of horror has earned it another nickname, Killer Capital USA. And last night, tragedy struck again."
The TV turned off. Reyes was used to this. As soon as her mother hears anything about the horrors of Shadyside, she is reminded about what happened to her sister. What happened in 1978.
Her father looked over to Reyes once he turned off the TV, "Nak, what did I tell you about blasting this around the house. If your mother was here, it would upset her."
"I'm sorry Ama, but I know the girl who died."
Heather Watkins. Although Reyes wasn't close friends with the girl, they did sit next to each other in biology. And whenever Reyes happened to go to the mall, Heather would always be open to getting a slush puppy with her. Reyes couldn't believe that Heather was really gone, and that Ryan Torres was the one to kill her. Now, Reyes knew very little about the Torres boy, but from what she had heard from Heather, he was annoying but still a very sweet boy.
"Oh I'm sorry Reyes, I didn't know. Are you okay?"
"Don't worry Ama, I'm fine. Where is mom anyway?"
Reyes had not seen her mother since last night, and it was very unusual for her mother not to say goodbye to her before she went to school.
"She's gone to see a friend. I know, very strange, but it's good with her to get up and about."
Another thing you should know about Reyes's mother is that she did not have many friends, and she barely leaves the house. Reyes and her father always try to convince her to leave and to make friends, but she always refuses, saying she has important things to do at home. So you can imagine Reyes surprise when she found out that her mother has actually left the house, to meet a friend at that.
"Really? What friend, who are they?"
"I don't know, I didn't ask. I was was just excited to see her actually leave the house. Speaking of leaving the house, shouldn't you be on your way to school?"
