If you were to crack open her ribs, you would find it has consumed her.
Covered her bones, and her heart. It has eaten her up whole. It is her.
It's been growing for awhile. Every summer he waters it. Keeps it alive. Maybe, she thinks, he doesn't even realize what he's done. What he's doing.
It's her fault. She knows it. She's let it consume her. Hasn't tried to stop it. But, a naive soul never sees past the shiny exterior of a false god. So, she worships anyhow, keeps it alive.
A fallen angel has lost their innocence. Once they wished you wouldn't fall to the feet of a false idol, yet here she kneels. And here lays the fallen angel. Wounded. Broken. Never the same.
Perhaps it wasn't just her. Perhaps the weight of the father and the overwhelming hatred for his brother was apart of it too. But here he lays fallen, still.
Summer is a curse. She thinks. Yes, summer is a curse. Because if it weren't for summer she wouldn't be consumed by this. If it weren't for summer she wouldn't be kneeling. If it weren't for summer he never would've clipped his wings.
This, that grows every summer. This curse that has consumed her. This is lovers rot. And lovers rot stays with you, sticks to you, is you. Forever. Summer or not.
