chapter v ━━ the 'distraction'

🦋

Rhea rarely second-guessed anything once she'd made up her mind about it.

but this was really starting to feel like an exception!

(Rhea was too dedicated to back off now!)

Turns out that the 'opening' that Sirius had for her was really fucking stupid. And that was why she was here, standing at the start of the narrow and dimly lit corridor that ended at Argus Filch's office door.

Let's take a step back and summarize what Sirius had told her over the Herbology lesson (and it was an effort not to smack him and tell him to fuck off, Rhea might add)—The Marauders had made an elaborate prank that they wanted to pull on the school's caretaker because he'd confiscated some of the items that Peter Pettigrew had gotten from Zonko's joke shop during their last trip to Hogsmeade.

And guess what she was supposed to do in this 'grand' scheme that they'd cooked up? (Hint: it was something she wasn't pleased with at all!)

She was supposed to play the 'distraction'.

To elaborate, she was supposed to keep Filch occupied in conversation when he came out to do his evening rounds around the castle,  particularly the corridor outside his office because he didn't trust any of the students, while Sirius and his friends snuck into his office and planted a few dung bombs, and got their things back.

("It's all about getting even, y'know?" Sirius had said, working carefully with the aconite plant that they were given. Easy for him to say, right?)

And she agreed to this only because she was positive that this match that she'd worked up in her head between James Potter and Freya would work like a charm—and she wasn't called 'the cupid' for no reason, right?

Rhea rubbed her palms together when she felt a chilly draught blow through the open windows that lined the wall.

She hadn't really been in this part of the castle often (because why would anyone want to run into Argus Filch or his nasty cat?), and she had to lie to Freya that she was going to the library because she'd get mad if she knew what Rhea was really doing and why.
