chapter fourteen | the more annoying plan

"AT SUNDOWN, WE fire a shot into the air," Rick started to explain the plan. The group that came to the city to rescue Carol and Beth consisted of Laurel, Daryl, Ethan, Noah, Tyreese, Sasha, and Rick. The sheriff kneeled on the floor as they all stood around him, "Get two of them out on patrol. Once it's dark enough that the rooftop spotter won't see us, we go. We cut the locks on one of the stairways, and take it to the fifth floor. I open the door, and Daryl takes the guard out."

"How?" Tyreese asked.

"He slits his throat," Rick shrugged nonchalantly. The room was silent for a moment until he continued, "This is all about us doing this quietly, keeping the upper hand. They're not expecting us. From there, we fan out. Knives and silenced weapons." He glanced at Laurel who stood beside her brother, She was strapped with knives, shown and hidden, while her brother held an automatic rifle against his chest, standing next to her calmly.

Their youngest sister was back at the church with a few others, caring for Judith with Carl. The three siblings exchanged long hugs goodbye, Laurel giving Judith a few kisses on each cheek to make her smile. Cassie wished them luck, to hurry back home with Beth and Carol so they could rescue the world next.

Laurel had faith in rescuing Beth and Carol, but not much for the world.

"We need to be fast," Rick interrupted her thoughts as he continued further. He used a jagged rock to carve X's into the dusted floor. "Tyreese, Sasha, take them. Daryl, you take care of whoever is in the kitchen. Laurel and Ethan will take and cover the hallway, I got Dawn. If they're smart, the rest of them will give up. Then it'll be six on three. Eight on three once we get a weapon to Beth and Carol."

"Fourteen on three, the wards will help," Noah interrupted. The wards, as he explained to them, were as eager to leave as he and Beth were. They didn't want to stay captive at the hospital much longer. Laurel didn't know if she could trust strangers much, but Noah spoke confidently. Though he was still a stranger to her. It seemed he cared dearly for Beth so she had to put faith in his word, for her and Carol's sake.

Tyreese looked down at Rick, "That's best case. What's worst case? All it takes is one of those cops going down the hall at the wrong time, seeing Laurel and Ethan, and managing to yell out a warning. Then it's not quiet. All hands on deck. We're talking about a lot of bullets flying around."

"If that's what it takes," Ethan spoke coldly.

"It's not, if we get a couple of her cops alive out here, we do an even trade. Theirs for ours, everybody goes home," Tyreese offered another plan.

"Yeah, I get it. And it might work," Rick stood, speaking sternly to him. he pointed to his carved plan on the floor, "This will work."

Laurel glanced at Daryl across from her, and she could tell he was more in agreement with Tyreese than her. She was proven right as he spoke up. "Nah, that'll work too." Rick turned to him, and Daryl looked past him to Noah, "You say this Dawn, she's just trying to keep it together, right?"
