《Phony: A person who pretends to be someone else or to have feelings or abilities that he or she does not really have》

-

"Hey.. (Y/N)!" Ai tilts his head to you, but still focused on the task he had. Carefully combing through his daughter's blonde hair.

"Yes?" You ask him, seated by his side as you hold the phone up for him. Which played a step-by-step video on how to braid.

Ruby had begged her father earlier to style her hair. While neither you nor Ai knew how to make cute hairstyles, the two of you agreed to figure it out... With the help of the internet!

Glancing away from the video he watched, he places a hair tie at the tail end of the 'braid.'

"What do you think! It looks good right?" Ai said, a prideful huff leaving him as he crosses his arms.

You and Aqua, (the young boy sat next to his father) stare at Ai blankly.

"..." Aqua hummed, but didn't bother to critique. Shooting you a look that said, 'I can't tell him'.

You smile, and praise Ai.. Kind of..?

"Well.. It looks good.. But.. It doesn't look like the video.."

"Ah..." Ai said. Staring at the small screen, then back at his daughter's tangled head of hair.

"I see.." Ai says thoughtfully. Pulling out a small hand mirror and showing Ruby.

"So? What do you think?" Ai asks his young daughter, a bright smile on his face.

"I LOVE IT!" Ruby squeals in delight, uncaring of her messy hair as she sits up and hugs her father's stomach.

"Hehe~!" Ai smirked, as if he just won a battle. Which in turn, caused you relent and smile.

"Aqua! Mom! What do you think?" Ruby asks, sitting up and getting off of Ai's lap. Doing a small twirl as Aqua claps politely.

You straightened up at the name. 'Mom.'

You side-eye Ai, but he doesn't seem bothered by it...

"Daddy! Daddy, Look!" Ruby says as she does a small pose.

Ai chuckles but gasps in awe. "Your footwork is getting better Ruby! You'll be a pro in no time!"

"You dance Ai?" You ask the purple haired male. He confidently nods at your question. "Of course! It's because I have to practice choreography everyday.." Ai sighs in fake exhaustion, laying back dramatically on his son. Who rolled his eyes at his father's antics, patting the purple-haired males forehead.

"Hm.. Teach me?" You say, looking at the male. Ai starry-eyed pupils became a bit dimmer by your request.

Yet he quickly smiles, shaking his head. "No~ You'll probably fall on your face." Ai says snidely. You huff at him, standing up and placing yourself beside Ruby.

"Ruby, show me your moves again so I can prove your Papa wrong."

You say, getting into a determined position as Ai stares at you in disbelief.

Ruby nods determinedly, getting into a position as Aqua grabs the remote, finding a peppy cheerful performance on the T.V. The music starts to play as you do your best to follow the young girls movements.

"You put your left foot in and twirl!" Ruby scolds while you start breathing ruffly from your nose.

"Go, go..." Aqua cheers bluntly as Ai's expression had turned into a awkward grin at your awkward 'performance'.

-

Ai let's out a content sigh as he flops onto the couch. "So good.." He breathes out in satisfaction, his hair dripping wet as a small towel hanged on his shoulders. Ai walks over to your laying form, taking up the spot that wasn't covered by your legs, rather next your head.

Mindlessly staring at the T.V and taking glances at your relaxed body, that laid almost lifeless.

"Am I good parent, (Y/N)?"

Ai asks, his lips curling at the sides of his mouth, but not exactly a smile.

You stare at him, about to open your mouth but he continues.

"I.. I don't know what I'm doing half the time, yet I try. I want my kids to be happy, but I endangered them by just being alive."

Ai sighs, a bitter scoff leaving his throat.

"I fib all the time and never give the right answer, I want to love my kids. But.. I barely know how.. Why can't I learn.. Why can't a lie just be enough."

Ai says thoughtfully, his starry-eyed pupils gone. No longer bright. No longer that shinning white, nor that black breaking star you once saw...

You remembered that moment you shared, you were on the same couch. That same fading shade of the night sky in his eyes.

It was different from then to now. There was no malice, happiness, nothing, no stars, just a empty abyss gazing at you as if he didn't even know you.

It wasn't scary, it wasn't joyous either, it was sad.

His words made you sad.

What do you say to someone who looks so hopeless and lost?

'Your a good parent!'

Or.

'Try harder! You'll get better at it!'

...

Why can't, those words, be enough?

"... No one is ever satisfied, Ai. You or anyone else will  never be."

...

"I don't know what kind of person you are. And I think, for now. It's enough. You may not ever love for all I know.."

You pause, sighing tiredly.

"But, thinking that the effort your doing isn't adequate and wanting to feel that connection.. I think that shows.. Something."

You press throughout your teeth, hoping your answer would help.

You meekly stretched for his hand, he does nothing to stop you as you now hold it firmly as you stare at his expressionless gaze.

Ai is silent at your response as he squeezes back.
