∞owe you a punch∞
Rudransh Singh Chauhan
Long eyelashes grazed the flawless, radiant skin of her cheeks, her little nose slightly rounded at the tip, and her plump pink lips, the upper settling gently over the lower, stretching into a small curve. A few free strands from her loosely tied bun fell over her cheek, casting a black shadow. I woke up from sleep to gaze at my dream. How many nights had I spent imagining caressing her face with just the sight of my eyes?
She was soundly sleeping with her head nestled between her crossed arms that rested on the edge of my bed. I still couldn't shake away the thought of losing her once again. When that man was about to hurt her, everything in me screamed to save her. I couldn't let it happen—not when I was there. And fortunately, she was safe.
When I woke up this morning, she wasn't in the hospital, and a major part of me was relieved. I had already seen how the hospital environment affected her, but a small part of me still longed to see her when I opened my eyes. For years, I had wished that her face would be the first thing I'd see every morning when I woke up. Her brother, Aridhaan Singh Rajvansh, was here—the only man to date who had dared to lift his hand on me and punch me. I didn't fight back. She was there, and the last thing I wanted was for her to witness me fighting with her brother, the man she loved most. I knew what her brother meant to her; she loves him more than anything in this world. And moreover, he was right—I deserved that punch. His sister was hurt because of me, and I deserved every blow he wanted to throw at me.
He sat on the sofa in the living area of the room, looking like he hadn't slept all night. My throat was parched, so after regaining consciousness, I reached for the water on the side table. The movement sent a sharp, shooting pain through my right arm, down to my lower back, and the numb area from before now throbbed with pain. I let out a hiss, catching Rajvansh's attention. Without saying a word, he pressed the button over the bed, calling the medical staff.
A nurse entered quickly. "He's regained consciousness," Rajvansh informed her before walking out of the room.
After he left, the nurse helped me gulp down some water, soothing my dry throat. A few minutes later, the doctor arrived, checking my vitals and asking me some random questions, likely to assess the aftereffects of the anesthesia. "We'll run some tests, Mr. Chauhan. Until then, you may rest," the doctor said with a reassuring nod before leaving. The nurse adjusted the bed, inclining the upper portion slightly to make me more comfortable, as it relieved the pressure on my lower back.
Rajvansh re-entered the room with the authority of a man who owned the world around him. It wasn't just his words that commanded respect; his mere presence was enough. But his aura was entirely different from that of his sister. While his authority was clear and commanding, she captivated the world with just a smile or the twinkle in her eyes. She didn't need authority to cast a spell; her charm was effortless, and people would do anything for her without question.
"How is she?" I asked him as he stood beside me.
"Thanks to you, she's safe." The softness in his usually firm tone caught me off guard, especially coming from the mighty Mr. Rajvansh. He cleared his throat, making it clear that this wasn't just a casual check-in on my well-being.
"What is it?" I inquired, sensing there was more to this conversation. The man's expression suggested he wasn't here just to exchange pleasantries.
"I know you love my sister," he began, his tone so neutral that it left me uncertain of his intentions. Was this a threat? An appreciation? Or was he about to issue a warning to stay away from her?
