I was pacing the floor of the Marauder when the call came through the com channel. They were in trouble. I knew it was too risky, but they didn't listen. They were recognized and now Crosshair was on their tail.
"I have to go help them," I said to Tech and Omega who were still on the ship with me.
Tech turned to me, clearly not a fan of the idea, "Our orders were to ready the ship and get ready for a quick get away. You going after them would not be ideal."
"They got into this mess because of me, I'm going to help get them out." He shook his head in disapproval, but knew my mind was made up.
Omega ran forward, "I'm coming too."
It was enough of a risk having me leave the ship, I wasn't about to let Omega do the same. I knelt down and put my hands on her shoulders, "I need you to stay with the ship, Omega. I can't risk anything happening to you."
She became visibly upset at being turned down for the second time in a row, "I'm not helpless, you know," she said with defeat.
"I know," I agreed, "but this is something I need to do on my own." Omega nodded, accepting the unfortunate turn of events just as Tech had.
I stood up and looked at my two companions. "Be sure the ship is ready," I said with an uncontrollable grimness to my voice. Turning away from them, I raised my hood over my head, placed my lightsaber on my side, and walked out the door.
I made my way towards the commotion. I could hear blaster fire, locals screaming, and things being destroyed. Crosshair clearly didn't care what, or who, got in his way. I was almost to the source of all the noise when a large shadow loomed over me. A dark Imperial ship was landing just ahead. I continued my pursuit, but moved to the alleyways. As I moved, I kept one eye on the ship while also being sure to stay hidden.
I stopped dead in my tracks when the figures disembarked from the ship. Three people, dressed in all black, walked out in front of the ship. When I saw who they were, I thought my legs were going to go out. All three had been faces that I had seen working in the Jedi Temple all that time ago. I didn't know them personally, but that didn't matter. These were clearly Jedi who turned to join the Empire, for whatever reason I couldn't comprehend. But what were they doing here?
My question was answered before I even had time to come up with an idea. One of the former Jedi stepped forward and drew a red lightsaber. "As I'm sure you're aware, we are the Inquisitors," he said blankly. "Where is the Jedi? We know the clones they were traveling with have been seen here," he paused waiting for someone from the forming crowd to speak up. All he got in response was silence. "If you tell us what you know, you will not be harmed," he spoke again, but was still met with only scared stares from the locals.
I stared at my former ally, at his red lightsaber humming in his hand. At that moment, I knew what my dream had meant. These Inquisitors were hunting me, and if I didn't do something about it, they would be successful in their endeavors. I had to stop myself from vomiting. The very idea that former Jedi were willing to turn on their sworn brothers and sisters, to hunt them down, to kill them, was sickening.
One of the inquisitors was growing impatient with the lack of response from the onlookers. He began harassing them for information, even getting to the point of threatening them with bodily harm. Although I needed to help my friends get to safety, I knew they were capable soldiers. Meanwhile, these innocent and powerless villagers were being terrorized because of me. It was my presence that was endangering them, and I had to do something.
I stepped out of the shadows knowing that it could be one of the last things I ever did. "I assume you're looking for me," I stated as clearly and as confidently as I could. The Inquisitors turned to face me and I lit my lightsaber.
The Inquisitor who seemed to be in charge stepped forward, "Ah, Master Y/N, how kind of you to join us," he said with malice.
I readied myself for a fight and the Inquisitor did not let me down. He force jumped towards me, swinging his double edged lightsaber. My movements were rusty from my time in hiding, but I let the force guide me. I blocked his attacks, but was struggling to gain momentum, to get on the offensive. Surprisingly, the other Inquisitors watched from the sidelines, seemingly letting their leader claim his victory.
After fighting for what felt like forever, the Inquisitor knocked my lightsaber out of my hand. I reached out through the force to grab it, but he kicked me in the chest and I fell to the ground. Exhaustion and pain ached through my body. He stood over me and stared me down with hateful eyes. The heat from his lightsaber mere inches from my face was all I could focus on. "It has been a pleasure spending time with you Y/N. Please, give your former master my regards when you see him," he mocked as he raised his lightsaber, readying a deadly blow. I closed my eyes, preparing for the pain, but it never came.
I opened my eyes to see the Inquisitor knocked over, the impact from an energy blast in his armor. Turning my head as quickly as possible, I saw Omega standing in the distance, her energy bow ready to strike again. I took the opening she had given me and grabbed my lightsaber. By this time, the Inquisitor was getting up and the others were moving into action. I wouldn't be able to beat them in combat, so I ran as fast as I could towards Omega. "After them!" I heard the Inquisitor yell.
We ran back towards the ship never stopping to catch our breaths or turning to look back. Suddenly three figures burst through the trees next to us, but to my relief it was Hunter, Echo, and Wrecker. Confusion fell onto Hunter's face, "Where have you two been?" he asked as we continued our race back to the Marauder.
"You don't want to know," was all I could manage to get out.
He seemed to accept that answer for now, but gave me a look that told me he was going to want details later. "Tech, we're almost there, get ready," he said into his com channel.
A concerned Tech responded, "One problem, Omega and Y/N left and haven't returned."
"We've got them," Hunter responded.
"Ah, good," Tech replied. Both surprise and relief in his voice. I could only imagine how it went when Omega left.
We all piled into the Marauder and Tech took off. Before we even got into space, there were two ships firing at us. It was chaos on board as Wrecker manned the guns, Echo and Tech piloted the ship, and Omega and I filled Hunter in on who the other ship was next to Crosshair's. The ship took hit after hit, but the shields seemed to hold. Just as I thought they would for sure go out, we made the jump into hyperspace.
When we were finally able to breathe again, I turned to Omega. I needed to speak to her as I owed her an apology. I have never doubted her abilities, but prioritized protecting her over giving her freedom. Now I realized that I was in the wrong. "Hey kid," I said, getting down on her level, "thank you for saving me back there. I owe you my life." The weight of what happened hit me, I would have died back there if not for Omega going against my orders. "I'm sorry I didn't listen to you earlier, it won't happen again," I apologized.
Omega smiled and gave me a hug. "I'm just glad you're okay," she said as she squeezed me tighter.
Hunter stepped forward, clearing his throat. "Uh, count me in on that," he said meekly. Omega looked at him with hopeful eyes. "From now on, we'll recognize your capabilities and not just keep you on the ship" he said more confidently, "I promise." I looked at Omega and then I looked at Hunter, my heart filled with warmth. Instead of trying to squash my feelings, I fully embraced them. Even if I abandoned some ways of the Jedi, I knew that I would never become one of the monsters that the Inquisitors had turned into.
