I got off my motorcycle and chained it to the bike rack. I wouldn't park it here but I just recently got banned from the departments parking lot. Apparently where I parked my bike prevented a car from getting out? As if it was my fault. If your car is half the size of the parking spot then find another place which fit's your car or learn how to correctly park. Although it sucks, this has only been the safest place, and I have all the space I need and I hardly ever see any bikes as most people nowadays drive a car. So much for saving the planet.
I enter the building and go straight to my office. I turn on my computer and check todays calendar, and the first thing I see written in red font is 8am see miller in his office. Strangely I remember Eleanor's comment from Friday "You must be out of your mind thinking I will be working with him".
I didn't really understand what she meant by that. There is nothing wrong me which will prevent people from working with me, so what is the problem? Is it my asshole personality? If it's because they think I'm better than everyone or I'm mean or any other reason they have. I couldn't care less. I'm not gonna lie and say I'm average at my job, I'm not amateur, or naturally gifted, I'm just good. I went to school, focused, studied, went to college, got a degree and with that I got a job. I'm not special, I don't have a sob story which makes me stand out. I'm just like everyone else and respect those who do the same as me. I am not mean, If I don't see a point to talk I don't, its a waste of time. Just like friendships, you spend year's talking to a person. They end up knowing your entire autobiography. All for what? all for it to end. Something happens, it ruins the friendship, and then your left with a bunch of other things to deal with.
Yet, Eleanor is a different story. I don't understand why she is different. I have spent countless nights mulling over of how we even got to each other, a starting point for our madness. Just one day we both snapped. I don't even know what to call it. A Hateship? Sounds just about it. We are anything remotely close to friends or, let alone a relationship. The only thing we can agree on is the hate we have for each other. She act's so hostile and only towards me. She sees me as a problem and I see her as the cause. That's how it always has been and will be in her terms.
I watch the sunrise out the windows. Thinking about the situation I will be in 1 hour. I already know this might end up being the worst assignment I have ever worked on. Guess we'll just have to see who makes it out alive. Even in one piece.
.......
"Alright you two." Miller sits in his chair typing something in his computer. Before turning his attention on Eleanor and I. We sit in the two chairs facing him. For some reason I find it hard to concentrate on Miller as Eleanor is just sitting casually in her seat like I don't exist.
This is new.
"We just got new information today about the Cobras. Apparently they where caught up in some car chase. Caused a major accident, critically hospitalizing nine people one of them being a child under the age of ten." He gets up from his seat and crosses his arms.
I hear Eleanor gasp and cover her mouth. A child, a innocent child got hurt today probably going to school, or excited to go on a field trip, who knows. Nonetheless their life and safety was close to being lost, including the other eight people. I can't imagine how their family and friends are handling seeing their loved one in such a heartbreaking state.
"Yes truly unfortunate, therefore the sooner the both of you get your thick skull's working together we can prevent casualties like this from happening again." Miller angrily picks up a stack of papers.
I do a quick glance at Eleanor, but once she noticed me she did a weird thing with her lip for a quick second. What was that? I try to remember the scene in my head then it registers. Was that her pathetic attempt at smiling? I try to shake away that obscene image in my head, but it doesn't go away. Her perfectly defined dimples and eyes clearly make a coherent smile.
I look back at her but I see her preoccupied with the case file. Too preoccupied. I'm confused as why Eleanor is still reading the stupid thing. As if its telling her all the answers she needs to know.
"It has been confirmed by the FBI that these are the only men present in the gang however, Gabriel Sanchez has wing men working for him all across New York."
"Great, where do we start?". Eleanor closes the file and places it on her lap.
He look's between us before he speaks again.
"Your job is to assess the place of the crime scene. The police have already taped all exists and Interviewed everyone who was present in the building. The room belonging to the man who was shot has been left for the both of you to look at. Find anything you can and go on from there."
"Before you two go. Don't make any negations or deals to not work with each other. I don't have time for this idiotic and useless bickering to get in the way of solving this case. We need this and the both of you need it just the same. As long as both of you finish this task your free to hate each other however much you want. Now leave"
Silence fills the room and all of us are left sitting quiet.
"What are you two still doing here I said leave" followed by an irritated sigh.
Miller sits back down and proceeds writing in his computer again. I look to Elanor's seat but she is already out of the room. So much for working together.
"Eleanor" I call her from across the room while trying to catch up to her, both knowing damn well she wont get far. The whole thing takes me two strides until I'm standing outside miller office door facing her.
"Yes". Her face and tone of voice clearly show she's pissed off.
"Look I'm just going tell you now, if I could and I would have by now, I would be working on this case alone. Because we could probably face termination if we don't work together, but don't expect much let alone an acknowledgement for existing."
I'm not gonna make it easy for her to accept that I don't want to work with her because I think it's useless sugar coating something that's already known to be true, and it's that I don't want to be held back by someone like Eleanor who spends her time assessing every single angle, every statement, and a bunch of investigations, followed by a 60 page report. I've been on countless cases and it always the same, look for cues, wait for suspect to fall in the traps, and then capture them. In that very order, every single time.
"Wow, you just said finished my sentence for me".
"I'm glad we agree".
