I sat on the bed at Alison's side, watching her sleep. My hand lovingly stroked her hair. Today marked one year that my life had turned upside down. Today, a year ago, I met a sad short girl wearing an ugly purple uniform. Her small brown eyes looked kind to us when we needed help at that cheap diner.

I was wearing a suit and ready to go to the office. Today out of all days I could not get out of going to New York. This morning, some meetings had to be done in person.

Gracie had not tried to contact me since last Friday, but I would be a fool if I thought she had left the city.

Alison's eyes fluttered open. It was still dark outside. "Morning!" I whispered, and she smiled at me, not getting up and enjoying the way my hand brushed the ends of her hair. "I need to go to New York today."

She nodded. "The boys and I will spend the day at the Manor. Your mum invited us for lunch." Sure, Mother remembers what today is. Alison was not aware today was the day her life had changed completely.

"That's fine. The temperatures will drop this afternoon. You all should dress warmly if you play outside."

I kissed her forehead and was leaving, but Alison grabbed my hand. "Jake, are we good?"

Alison lifted her body, supporting it by her elbow, trying to stare at my face. "You haven't been present lately. On your birthday, you spent the entire afternoon locked in your office with Matt and when you got out, you two looked concerned. You seemed distant when you were near me. Have I displeased you in any way?"

I squatted down to be at her level. "We are good, baby. Work has been more stressful than normal. Once we are in England, things will get better."

It had nothing to do with work. The financial field was a stressful environment, but I learned how to manage it. I loved the game and had excellent players on my team. I did not carry all the burden alone. The problem was Gracie. Even without her presence, Gracie had a way to fuck up my good relationship with Alison.

I rubbed her cheek with the back of my hand and smiled. "You know what? Ask Mum if she can stay with the boys this evening. I want to take you out to dinner. I can be back in Riverside by 4 p.m., and we can do something here in Greenwich."

Alison smiled brightly, and I rubbed her belly. I could not wait to meet the little guy inside her. I pressed my lips against hers. "Now, I need to go. My first meeting starts early."

"Well done, my love!!!!" Jamie and I clapped our hands, watching Tommy somersault.

I stood up from the blanket with Jamie following behind and walked to Tommy to help him on the bike for his next performance. We were playing in the Manor's garden waiting for lunch to be served. Tommy was pretending to be a circus performer, and Jamie and I were the spectators.
