Eyelids flickered, revealing the world, unfocused and ethereal. The door opened, the sound distant, carrying little consequence. The light droned overhead, flickering irritably now and again, but never did its brightness waver, never did its onslaught relent. Only heavy eyelids offered protection from the constant glare, as sight faded with consciousness, but the light would just return at a later time with an undaunted ferocity.

Sometimes a flash of red passed somewhere across the brightness. This was usually following a growing pain, and a racing heart, the sound of blood pounding and panic rising. Yet, then everything faded once more, and the world became soft and gentle again, drowsy.

Only a vague sense of dread suggested anything was wrong. Though when the cause of the dread seemed to be becoming clearer, the world softened once more, darkening at the edges.

It was easier not to care, not to worry, but to watch the bright light fade, until heavy lids shrouded the unfocused world once more.
