FOR THEIR DATE, nancy had picked out a pair of jeans and a cropped shirt. she layered a button-up sweater on top, just in case she got cold. she paired her outfit with her cream colored converse, and grabbed her purse. she did her makeup and curled her hair as well, smiling at herself in the mirror.

she left a few early to stop by the store. she bought candy, drinks, and snacks to sneak in the movie. she also chose a bouquet of lilies- which steve had told her was robin's favorite. she drove to robin's place next, parking a few houses down since she was a bit early.

she used this time to boost her confidence, giving herself a pep talk in the rear-view mirror. she was nervous, really nervous. nervous was an understatement for how she was feeling. she didn't know why she was so anxious, she knew the date was going to go well.

as she was talking to herself, she saw a familiar car driving from the direction of robin's house. steve's car. he pulled up adjacent to nancy, rolling his window down. she rolled hers down as well.

"hey, nancy!" he yelled, waving.

"hey"

"robin's house is still a few houses down," he joked, laughing.

"thanks for pointing out the obvious," she joked back, laughing along. "i'm just recollecting myself before i pick her up"

"robin's really nervous"

"she is?"

"yeah. she's scared the date won't go well. she was all like 'i'm not interesting, i'm not funny, i'm not cool, i'm not good enough'. it was honestly sad"

"she thinks all those things about herself?" nancy asked, frowning. "i know i shouldn't be suprised based on the things she's said in the past but i thought she got better since vickie"

"she has. she's just scared, that's all. vickie was her first girlfriend, and she broke her heart"

"i know. if it makes her feel any better, i'm really nervous too"

"what are you nervous for?" steve questioned, raising an eyebrow.

"what if i'm...i don't know...not as good as vickie was?"

"nancy," steve sighed, "vickie was a piece of shit. she forced robin to smoke, cheated on her, and then insulted her"

"i know, i'm not talking about those parts of their relationship. i'm talking about the other parts- the good ones"

"seriously, you are a million times better than vickie. you have nothing to be worried about"

"thanks, steve"

"now go get robin! she's waiting on you"

"okay, okay. wish me luck"

"you don't need it," nancy eyed steve, glaring at him. "fine! good luck, nance"

"thanks!" she smiled, rolling her window back up and putting her car in 'drive'. she slowly rolled up a few more houses, reaching robin's.

"okay, you got this," she muttered to herself, picking up her phone to text robin. as she was about to hit send, she saw robin already walking down the driveway to her car.
