"ANTHONY, YOUR SOULMATE IS a bitch."
It's the first thing Emmy says to me when I walk into her shop. She's standing on a ladder, pulling a thick book down from one of the higher shelves.
"Um?" Why is she calling my soulmate a bitch?
"An uncooperative bitch of a soulmate you got."
"Would you like it if someone was calling you a bitch right now?" She gives me a sour look. "Don't make me regret bringing you coffee." I hold the cup up.
I have to be at the lounge soon, so I'm really just passing through. If I'd known she'd be in a mood, I would have bypassed coming altogether.
The lounge opens at eleven and Cherry told me to get there before they open. It's almost ten in the morning, so I think I'm good on time. I hate being late.
"Sorry, thank you." She steps down from the ladder and takes the iced coffee out of my hand. "You can ask Dom. She was being awful."
"What happened?" I peek into the storeroom. Dom is sitting at the table, on his phone. "D, what is she talking about?"
He sighs but doesn't look up. "She was being all judgmental and Jasmine put her in her place. You know how Em gets." I do know how Em gets.
"Wrong!" Em disagrees, storming in. "She was being difficult. All she had to do was agree. That 'I prefer he didn't see my trauma' bullshit. It was bullshit. She hasn't gone through shit. She's hiding something."
I'm lost. "Hold up. Talk to me like I'm slow –"
"Isn't that how we always talk to you?" Dom cuts in.
I roll my eyes. "Em, what are you talking about?"
She huffs, leaning against the doorframe. "She came in today. The spell worked."
"It did?" I ask. I woke up this morning with no recollection of any dreams. That wasn't supposed to happen.
"Partially. She told me the last memory of yours she saw was your 16th birthday." I flinch. That was not a good memory. "She was... very mean about that."
"She had every right to be. She saw Anthony slit his wrists with no warning. I would be mean about that too," Dom says, bored. I can tell they've had this conversation a few times before I got here and he's tired of it.
He's also not on Emmy's side which is saying something because he's always on Emmy's side.
"I told her the reason why we went the dreams route but she insisted it was a waste of time. She said that you both have phones if you want to get to know each other and we should've asked before doing something like that."
That was reasonable. Was it not? She was upset. I'd be upset too if I saw someone attempt suicide in front of of me with no proper warning. We should've asked.
"Am I tripping or was she not in the wrong?"
"She was not in the wrong," Dom confirms.
"I suggested she show you some of her memories," Em continues.
"With the same spell that fucked up the first time?" I check.
"I can fix it."
"You don't even know what went wrong." Is she sure she's not being the difficult one?
