Chapter 2
Wildfire looks up from nursing and gallops towards me,
" Willow!" He nickers to me, nuzzling me.
"Are you okay? Why did you do that!?" He whinnys to me playfully.
" I'm fine. Red fought the bear, and well... I was worried about my father." I said as I turned and galloped to the river with Wildfire but hear more than one horse following me. When I get there, Wildfire and Giant, an Appaloosa colt our age, are following me to the river. He looks at Wildfire and nips him on the neck, slowing down Wildfire.
" HEY!" I yell at him, he slows to a trot as he approaches me.
" What, weirdo? Why are filly's so protective over their colt friends? Do you like him?" He teases me, I look over his ears and see Wildfire galloping up behind him. So I stall Giant.
" Um...What?! No! Why would I like him?!" I lie.
Wildfire is very close so I move out of the way from his path. Wildfire comes up behind Giant and rams into him, knocking him into the river. I watch as he goes flying past me.
" That's what you get for nipping me, and most likely being mean to Willow!" He neighs to him as he comes dripping out of the water and charges towards Wildfire. I lope over and In between them and he knocks right into me and falls down.
" Wow, I didn't know that filly's were so strong." He looks up to me, then looks behind me and saw an Appaloosa stallion galloping over to us. Normally, there isn't this many stallions in any horse herd, but father is the nicest kind and let's the other stallions stay as long as they don't do any "funny business". He scrambles to get up but just falls backwards and just as I look behind us Caesar slides to a stop and looks at Giant.
" Um.. Hi father. We w-were just playing. I-" He stutters, looking up at his father.
" Oh.. I see, so now playing with another colt is nipping him? " He says then looks at us.
" Good Morning Cesar." Wildfire and I say.
" Good morning Willow, Good morning Wildfire." He says with a bow of his head.
" As for you, young colt-" He turns, but Giant is galloping away towards the herd.
" Excuse me, I will see you back at the herd." He whinnies back to us. Wildfire and I stay there for a few hours, talking and getting to know each other better. Until we look back at the herd and EVERYONE is sleeping, so we decide to head back.
" Willow, can I ask you a question?" He asks me, his eyes big and dark brown.
" Of coarse, anything." I politely tell him, just before Wildfire is about to ask that question, there is a huge flash of lightning and a loud bang of thunder. I look at him, he looks terrified, I probably am too.
" RUN!" He neighs and takes off to the herd. I can barely see his red coat through all this rain but we get to the overhang where the herd is.
" Willow!" Sierra neighs and lopes towards me.
" WILDFIRE!" Lace screams across the field and gallops to him. They steer us to the cave and sleep, huddled in a circle. Foals in the middle, mature horses outside. In the morning, it is still raining, I wake Wildfire and we go to a section of the cave.
" Hey, what did you want to ask me earlier?" I whine.
" Umm... I forget." He says quietly, looking down at his hooves.
" Hey, you can tell me anything! " I say looking deep in his eyes.
" Do you hear that?!" He says with ears pinned forwards and swerving left and right (He always had better hearing than me) and takes off to the mouth of the cave. I hear it now, thundering hooves, strange voices, loud whipping noises. Humans.
" Humans!" I whisper to him and we lope back to the herd and wake Sierra, Lace, Giant and Caesar up and get the herd moving and out of here. Red steers us into the canyon, trying to lose the humans but they keep up and it's even harder to see with the rain flying into our eyes. I find Wildfire near the rear and stay beside him. For an hour or so we start to loose sight of the herd, and eventually are galloping on our own.
We stop, expecting to hear the herd's hoof beats but all we hear is wind, rain, humans, their horses and our breathing. We start to jog and I hear a whooshing sound, it stops. I feel something going over my head, around my neck and then it tightens. I squeal in distress. Wildfire slides and stops, gallops over to help me.
" NO! GO BACK! SAVE YOURSELF, LEAVE ME!" I neigh to him.
" I can't, I can't leave you!" He squeals at me. I hear the same whooshing noise again, I tell him to run but he is stubborn as a mule and stays with me. The sound stops and then the next thing I know, he has a rope around his neck and is squealing like a rabid coyote caught in a trap. There is a tug on our ropes and we are getting dragged away from the herd.
When they reach us I see four humans with short hair on horses. One with hair over his mouth on a gray mare, one with things shielding his eyes on a black stallion, the other has a brown thing atop his head on a bay stallion and the last one looks weird with stuff drawn on his arms on a chestnut mare. The sun goes down and they set up these small, mini shelters. Wildfire and I are tied up to a tree, but the other horses are free roaming. The gray mare walks up to us and introduces everyone.
" Hi, my name is Bella, the bay is named Linco, the chestnut is called Fire and the black one is Domino." She says while munching on some grass.
" Hi, my names Willow, and this is Wildfire. May I ask why do you have stallions with mares? Don't they... You know-" I ask shying a bit.
" Oh no sweetie, they are geldings. Geldings are stallions who can't have foals." She says with a sweet tone.
" Oh, well where are we? Where's Sierra, Lace or Red?" I ask, watching the chestnut mare pin her ears at the bay gelding.
" We are in West Nevada, and I don't know a Sierra or a Lace. But I know a Big Red, he was a herd stallion when I was a foal, at another herd. But these men caught me and now I'm here." She says, flicking her tail in annoyance for flies.
" Red is my father. I'm really sorry Bella, but it's been a long day. We foals need more sleep, as my mother said. Nice to meet you, Bella." I nicker, yawning.
" Okay. Goodnight Willow, Goodnight Wildfire." She whinnies back to us, walking over to Domino, the black gelding.
" Goodnight Bella." I whinny to her.
" We're tired?" Wildfire asks.
" Let's get some rest, I think we have a long day ahead of us." I whisper, lying down beside him. He falls asleep, but my mind is racing. All I can think about is the herd, Sierra, Red, men, Bella and the other three horses, Fire, Linco and Domino. I watch Fire boss around Bella and Linco. I'm guessing she's the herd mare. I drift off thinking of the herd and my mother.
