Kaduna, Nigeria. The rain poured heavily outside my window, casting a serene ambiance as I indulged in the depths of my imagination. The gentle pitter-patter of raindrops drowned out the chatter of my family, allowing me to immerse myself in creative pursuits.

The rhythmic symphony of our tires against the wet road signaled our arrival home. "Farhan," my mother called, handing me her bag as we drew close. I wordlessly accepted, our familial closeness obviating the need for verbal confirmation.

Once inside, Sadais, my younger brother, closed the door behind us. As the eldest child of the family, I, Farhan, embraced life with a blend of joy and ambition, often expressing my creativity through culinary endeavors and a thirst for exploration.

After a tiring dinner, everyone dispersed to their rooms, and I followed suit, seeking solace in the warmth of a hot shower, the tranquility of ablution, and the solace of prayer before retiring for the night.

Suddenly, my name reverberated through the room, accompanied by vigorous shaking of my bed. It was Sudais, my brother, bursting with excitement. "Farha! Farha!! Farha!!!" he exclaimed, causing me to groggily rouse from my slumber. Confusion clouded my thoughts as I processed his unexpected proclamation.

"You're going to Egypt!" Sudais announced triumphantly. Disbelief washed over me as I struggled to comprehend how my father had consented to my journey abroad, especially to a destination he had vehemently opposed.

Flashback
During a family meal, my father broached the topic of my education, prompting a surge of anticipation within me. "Mama," he addressed me, invoking my late grandmother's name. His unexpected question about my desired study destination caught me off guard, filling me with a mix of astonishment and elation.

The prospect of studying abroad had never crossed my mind, particularly given my father's steadfast resistance to such notions, despite persistent suggestions from others, especially in light of my aspirations in medicine. Despite the challenges within Nigerian universities, I remained undeterred in my pursuit of medical knowledge.

"Daddy!" I exclaimed, rushing to embrace him, overwhelmed by gratitude and excitement. Despite my joy, his response left me crestfallen. His reluctance to endorse my dream of studying in Egypt shattered my hopes, prompting a futile plea for reconsideration.

Mama intervened, offering solace and encouragement, but my father's resolve remained unyielding. With a heavy heart, I resigned myself to his decision, though it meant relinquishing my dream of studying in Egypt.

Present
As I processed the whirlwind of emotions from the past week, Sudais' announcement left me reeling with disbelief. My father's unexpected change of heart felt surreal, yet undeniably thrilling.

I approached my father, brimming with gratitude, and promised to abide by his conditions. With his blessing, I eagerly began preparations for my journey, grateful for the unexpected opportunity that lay ahead.

Three days before my departure, anticipation bubbled within me like a dormant volcano waiting to erupt. African mothers, with their timeless wisdom, have a knack for imparting advice until it's ingrained in your very soul.

Mama's touch was gentle as she clasped my hand, her words carrying the weight of generations past. "I know you're eager to embark on this new journey, but never forget your roots. Your faith and family are your anchors in life, guiding you through every storm," she whispered, her words a blend of love and concern. She shared nuggets of wisdom, emphasizing the importance of prayer, discerning friendships, and staying connected despite the distance.

Her words resonated deeply within me, stirring a whirlwind of emotions. "In sha Allah, Mama, I'll do my best and never stray from the path you've set for me," I vowed, my voice quivering with emotion.

With Mama's guidance, I meticulously packed my bags, each item infused with her love and blessings.

In their private sanctuary, Daddy voiced his apprehensions to Mama. "Habibty, I'm not sure if this is the right decision. Are we certain Farha will be safe there?" his voice laced with worry.

"Trust in Allah, Khalid. We've prayed for her safety, and we must have faith that He will protect her. Our job is done; now, we entrust her to His care," Mama reassured, her unwavering faith providing solace to her husband's troubled heart.

With a silent prayer, they found solace in each other's embrace, drawing strength from their shared bond.

Today marked the beginning of a new chapter as I bid farewell to my loved ones. Despite the excitement pulsing through my veins, a pang of sorrow tugged at my heartstrings. Leaving behind my family felt like tearing a piece of my soul away, yet I knew this journey was essential for my growth.

Mama, Daddy, and even the stoic Sudais masked their emotions with false bravado, but I saw through their façade. As we journeyed to the airport, the weight of our impending separation hung heavy in the air, each of us lost in our thoughts.

The boarding announcement jolted me back to reality, signaling the inevitable moment of departure. Tears welled in my eyes as I clung to my father, my resolve crumbling under the weight of uncertainty.

"Daddy, I don't want to leave. Please, I don't want to go," I pleaded, my voice choked with emotion.

Mama's silent tears mirrored my own, her anguish palpable yet unspoken. "You must go, my dear. Pursue your dreams and become the best doctor you can be," Daddy urged, his voice tinged with sorrow.

With a heavy heart, I bid my family farewell, their words of encouragement echoing in my mind as I walked toward my destiny.

Alone in my seat, surrounded by strangers and the hum of the aircraft, I grappled with a maelstrom of emotions. The journey ahead seemed daunting, yet I resolved to face it head-on, armed with the love and wisdom instilled by my family.

The flight passed in a blur of anxious anticipation and fleeting moments of tranquility. Upon arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, I reached out to my parents, seeking solace in their comforting voices amidst the chaos of travel.

As I boarded my next flight to Cairo, Egypt, excitement mingled with trepidation, yet I embraced every aspect of the journey. From the scenic views outside my window to the warm blanket cocooning me in comfort, I savored each moment, knowing that every experience would shape the woman I was destined to become.

With a heart full of hope and determination, I stepped onto the soil of my dream country, ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
