If you want to use watercolors, you can't just use them on a thin piece of paper. You're going to need to use a thick paper that can absorb it without getting ripped. You'll end up with much better results.
You can paint wet on dry like most people, or you can even try something like dry on dry, dry on wet, wet on wet...
Remember, the more water you add, the paler the color becomes.
