My father looked at Knight Alan aghast at both his request and what it implied. That the prince was nearing death and only an ultra-powerful Carvone could heal him.
"Prince Nikolai is wounded?"
"No," Alan said shaking his head, "Prince Raymond." Ah, so not the prince. But a prince. My father paused seeming to take this in mind. Turning to Solstice, he held out his hand in her direction.
"I offer the services of my eldest daughter, Solstice Carvone, to our honorable royal family."
Solstice gasped, holding a hand over her mouth in surprise. She looked between our father and the knight. This was an unbelievable opportunity to keep our family in the good graces of the royal family, as long as she did it well. Alan passed behind our fathers' chair and came up to Solstice, proceeding to kneel on one knee in front of her now. He held out his hand, palm upwards. I could not help but compare it to a proposal between a handsome knight and the prettiest girl in the kingdom.
"My Lady, Solstice Carvone, do you accept?"
Solstice straightened her back, laying her own hand in the knights. "I do."
The knight stood up from his kneeling, keeping Solstice's hand is his all the while. He smiled back at her. In a soft voice that only Solstice, him and I could hear he said, "I know you can do it."
I swear I saw my sister blush. I, however, almost vomited at the sweet undertone of his words.
Father cleared his voice and the two separated, dropping each other's hands. Solstice walked up to father, now taking his hands into hers. "I will not let you down father." Father only nodded his head. Mere moments ago, he had been reprimanding me for being sick and now he is the proud papa of the most beautiful genius of our generation. It was so double headed it made me almost as ill as the pointy-eared knights flirting.
Father looked up and spotted me, I fixed my disgusted expression before he could see it, making it as placid as possible. His eyebrows scrunched again, this time at me.
"Take your sister with you."
"Father?" Both me and Solstice asked simultaneously.
He looked back at Solstice and squeezed her hands. "It will help her gain experience. Perhaps she will learn something from watching your work."
"Father." Solstice said, being stern.
Alan came up behind her and laid a hand on her shoulder, "We have to go now, Sol." The knight looked back at me, keeping the warm and kind tone in his voice as he called my name. "Fenway." If I hadn't heard him flirting with my sister I almost would have believed he was being nice to me.
Following Alan out of the dining hall in haste, he brought us to a pair of horses. A huge black stallion and a smaller white mare with well-defined muscles. Solstice and him approached the white mare. He held his hand out to help Solstice up onto the horse, she took it with a smile. Up on her horse, she looked even more stunning. In the evening light, her golden earrings flashed as they dangled against her neck. Her lavender dress fluttered against the white pelt of the horse. She looked like a princess. I was so focused on her that I did not notice Alan had come up to me. When he touched my shoulder, I nearly jumped out of my skin.
He laughed at my reaction, when I glared at him, he simply pointed to the stallion. I looked from the horse back at him, realizing a fundamental issue.
"I don't know how to ride."
"I know." He said while laughing, "You are riding with me. Come on." In what was a smooth and practiced move for him, he mounted the stallion with ease. He extended his hand down for me to grab hold of. I looked at his hand, then at his face. He was still laughing at me on the inside. I could see it. I narrowed my eyes at him. Seeing my judgement, he sighed. "Come on, Fen, are you going to make me wait?"
