"Not yet corpses, still we rot"

Kaylnn pulled a trolley free from the line of them at left of the store, she shivered a little as the hot air blew over her. It was sickly warm, she hated superficial air so damn much, it made her want to throw up.

Walking briskly, she made her way towards the aisles lit by the fluorescent lights. Granola, flapjacks and cereal boxes stretched down either side, the colours just as bright. She knocked a few randoms into the trolley, no one would care what was in the cupboard, not with everything going on.

Not much was noticed there, and being back at home felt a little like spinning out.

She reached the small bakery section, halting. It was the sign that stopped her— 'Pies'— was written in round cheery letters. Kaylnn blinked and walked faster, but not fast enough to run from the memories that rushed at her.....

Bobby and her had barely slept that night, the night Sam left and Dean had gone to find him. But as readings came in from everywhere, the weather charts, astrological updates— everything seemed to be coming to a climax. Together, they'd watched on the tv through some live channel the explosion of white light across the city of Ilchester, Maryland.

It had taken approximately an hour before the reports and disasters began, and they'd still not stopped. She hadn't known whether the Winchesters were alive or dead.

Kaylnn knew that after everything she wanted to warn her family, warn them of 'what' she wasn't sure but just....to do something of significance. So, taking an ancient Ute from Bobby's yard, she'd driven to her home state— North Carolina.

When Peter Adams had opened the door to see her the silence had been unlike anything she'd ever endured. But she endured it. The steel glare still hurt but she'd staked vampires, exorcised spirits and faced angels, this man would not reduce her to anything but the woman she'd become.

"Kaylnn—" he'd began, in the cold voice he'd always used, whatever else was said she blocked out. Somehow, they both made it inside....she'd only come back for her Aunt, Rosetta, and unfortunately her former home was her only place to stay and get in contact.

Her father had stood by the marble top counter, jaw set. Kaylnn knew there would be no rejoicing when she returned but this was glacial at best.

"You've changed" he'd said "you look....better.."

From the old man? That was like being told the sun shone from her—

"Since the last time I saw you anyway."

Kaylnn had crossed her arms, the last time they'd seen each other was when Dean was in hell, and she'd gotten dragged back here. A different time.

"I heard the news." Rosetta had called her, when she'd already been on the road, her grandmother  had died. She'd met the woman once or twice when Kaylnn had still been using training wheels on her bike.

"So you just came back for the funeral?" Peter asked.

"Something like that."

"Excuse me, sorry!"

A light voice yanked her back to the present as a woman reached to Kaylnn's left.
"Oh, my bad I'll move." Stepping quickly to the side, the lady pulled a box of eggs from the shelf and made her way back down the aisle.

Kaylnn mentally shook herself, trying to organise her mind. After that she dumped random groceries into the trolley, speeding around the shop.

When the bill added up the girl barely looked at the number, it was her father's card after all.
Her and her father had been in proximity less than 24 hours and already gotten in a fight when she'd refused to drive anything but the Ute from Bobby's.
