In the crack of dawn, our whole group went out at sea

In the crack of dawn, our whole group went out at sea. Just the other day, we got the coordinates for the Royal Merchant's shipwreck. John B, the pogues and I are determined to find the gold that sunk with it. Everyone is obsessing over this "treasure hunt", John B more than anyone.
I don't fully agree with all of this, because it's a long shot. We look and seem like idiots believing we can actually find it. My brother's mental state is not at its best, and this treasure hunting is not helping. He thinks it will bring him closer to our father, but I for one don't want to be brought close to him.
I'm just doing it for the money.
So, our adventure begins once we reach the area of the sunken boat. We waited for the perfect day to go out, and agreed on a sunny afternoon. JB couldn't fight his urge any longer, so he had all of us wake up at 4AM to leave at first light. We took Heyward's boat out in the open, but had no luck.
We found the Royal Merchant and that earned a great "hurrah", but no gold could be found in it.
Defeated, John and I leave in the HMS pogue, heading back to the chateau, and the others go back with Pope.
"Hey JB, hear me out. I've got two theories." I pronounce as we tie our boat onto the dock.
"I'm all ears." He says in a sad tone.
"Someone got to it before us, or..." I try to create some suspense.
"Or what?" He's not having it.
"The gold never sunk with the ship in the first place." I finalize my second and most proud theory.
"y/n, that's actually a good reason. I'll hold onto it." He smiles in my direction.
"I know." I just shrug my shoulders in a cocky manner.
We enter our beloved household, but are greeted with a person we're not so fond of:
"Hello, John B. Hello, y/n." The DCS agent voices from the couch.
"God, what is she doing here." I mumble to myself in an aggravated tone.
"Cheryl! Hey! You know, this is kinda of bad timing." JB is on the edge of a meltdown. Imagine, being proved that once again we've failed in our quest of finding the gold, and right after being met with a person who wants to lock us up in an orphanage.
"Oh, really? How come?" Her voice makes my skin crawl.
"It doesn't matter why. You're just always present in bad moments." I declare with no worry of insulting her.
"Oh, and what kind of moments are "bad moments", may I ask?" She taunts.
"You may not." I respond curtly.
"Uncle T is not here. That's why it's bad timing." John interferes with a poor but plausible excuse.
"Oh, that's just because he's never around." Her facial expressions don't change.
I scoff: "That's a lie."
"Is it?" She's already figured us all out. She won't believe anything we throw at her anymore.
"Yeah, it is. Do you need me to show you his finger prints around the house? Or maybe grab some strings of his hair, because that ought to prove it to you." I could go at it all day.
"That won't be necessary, because we have the exact dates that your uncle has visited the Outer Banks." Her argument doesn't fool me.
"Oh, and when was that?" I strive to find her weak spot.
"March 28th of 2022. Guess he was here for a fishing contest that was held the day after." She stops to look at our reactions, then a slight but still visible smile takes a hold of her features.
"Guess Uncle T wasn't so interested in you guys after all." I clench my teeth, and tighten my fists at her statement.
"John B." She calls so he'd look in her direction.
His eyes meet hers, and she says:
"Underaged children cannot live without a legal guardian's protection-" I cut her off:
"We don't need protection."
"You of all people should know that." She ignores my point and continues with her speech:
"With your mother gone after y/n's birth, and your father lost at sea for almost 2 years now..." I can't stand what she is saying, knowing deep down it is only hurting my brother more.
"You're seventeen, almost an adult. y/n is y/a. Think about that, think about your sister." She tries to manipulate him.
He squeezes my hand.
"Well I think-" John begins, but runs for the front door as soon as I run for the back.
Cheryl gets up and tries to block the main entrance where my brother plans on fleeing.
I speed out the back.
"Don't make me hurt you." John B says.
She knows he's stronger than her so she gives in.
We both run free and meet up at JJ's house which is not so distant from ours.
I wait for my brother to arrive.
He walks into sight and the both of us are panting, but it I doesn't stop me from running up to him.
I embrace him, and begin to cry just at the thought of being taken away from him.
"It's okay, we're safe now." He assures me.
He breaks the hug and grabs my face with both hands so my glossy eyes meet his:
"No one is going to separate us." He pulls me back into an embrace.
"I promise." He pecks me on the head.
