St.Paul, Christmas Day, 2003

I had barely set my bag down in my new locker when a god awful bell sounded out and rang through the firehouse, sending me into active mode as I rushed towards the engine, eager to get out on a call. "Hey Rookie?" a voice calls from behind me and I turn around, catching a helmet being thrown at me. I nod my head with a smile and climb into the engine, taking a seat directly behind the Captain's chair and facing my colleagues. "We haven't been introduced. I'm Nash. Bobby Nash" a man in front of me holds out his hand for me to shake with a smile on his face.

"Nice to meet you sir. I'm Jessica Samson but everyone calls me Sam" I shake his hand and return the smile. "No need for the sir, Bobby is just fine" Bobby laughs and I laugh along with him.

When I look to everyone else in the engine, no one pays me any attention and my smile quickly fades as I look out the window. "Alright, we've got a two storey house fire, 5 people are inside, none have come out. Rookie, you stick with Nash the whole time. I see you anywhere else, you're in the kitchen for the week" the Captain informs us and I nod, smiling at Bobby who smiles back. As I look out the window, we turn onto a familiar street and panic ignites in my chest as we come to a stop, the house on fire being a painfully familiar one. "Oh god" I mumble as I stare at my childhood home, currently ablaze. "You alright Sam?" Bobby asks as we hop out of the engine. "This... this is my house" I quickly get ready, struggling to push my feelings down as I rush up to the Captain.

"Sir? I know the people in this house, they're my family" I get the Captain's attention and he nods, his face lacking emotion. "Give me names" he orders and I comply. "Parents names are Jackie and Victor, little boy is Andrew, little girl is Erin and the 19 year old is Sophie" I list off and he nods, relaying the information through the radio. "Get in there" he snaps and I rush into the house, attaching my mask and readjusting my helmet as I rush up the stairs, no one following behind me as they clear downstairs.

"Fire Department! Call out! Andy! Erin!" I yell, hearing a scream coming from Erin's room. I rush in and see Erin and Andy huddled on the floor, Andy unconscious as Erin is laid on top of him, flames burning her back as fire engulfs them both. "Erin!" I yell, pushing through the fire and grabbing them both, pushing them away from the flames. "Erin?" I shake her shoulders and rip off my glove, checking her pulse and feeling nothing and I scream in anger as I check Andy's pulse and feel nothing, a firefighter coming into the room. "Take them!" I yell, standing up and shooting out the room towards the two other rooms upstairs, looking into my parent's room and seeing them both laying on the floor, charred and burnt and I don't check to see if they're alive, moving onto my other sister's room and finding her on the floor.

"Sophie!" I scream, dropping down and checking her pulse, thankfully feeling one and I breathe a sigh of relief, rubbing her sternum with my knuckles as she comes too and coughs violently, turning her head and I see the entire left side of her face is burnt and melted. "Everybody out now" I hear the Captain order through the radio. I take my mask off and place it over her face, allowing her to get clean oxygen into her lungs as I cough, the smoke overtaking my senses. I take off the air tank and set it on the floor before taking off my jacket and laying it on top of her, slinging the air cannister back over my shoulder as I pick my sister up and struggle out the door to the stairs, taking them slowly so I don't fall.

I hear creaking and then the stairs cave in, collapsing underneath me and I fall, barely twisting my body enough so that I am underneath Sophie as we collide against the floor, flames engulfing us and I let out a scream as I push myself to my feet, standing up and running as fast as I can out the house with Sophie in my arms. I rush out the front door and collapse down the steps, laying Sophie on the floor as the house creaks and breaks behind me, firefighters rushing up to me and taking us away from the house.
