~DUNCAN~

Her eyes were closed, and her mind attempted to be blank but he was wiser. She also thought he couldn't hear her thoughts when he was at the garden, but he could. He sighed as he considered the nervous wreck she had been in the past few days leading up to this day, and guilt filled him.

Was it really necessary to visit Maya's grave?

He patted Yael's arm and sighed again. "I know you're awake."

Yael's eyes opened, and a frown formed on her face.

"I also know what you're planning to do," he said.

"I want to go too," she replied.

"I'm not having you outside when the KKK wants you dead."

"What I do instead?"

"Stay here, you'll be safe."

"But I don't want to," she protested.

"Please?" Duncan said, exhausted.

Yael sat up on the bed. "Please don't go, Duncan!"

"I'm not changing my mind," he said firmly.

"Why? Oh, why?"

"I've already explained myself," he said. "Yael, I knew I loved you the moment I met you - "

"You want know why you love me the moment you meet me?"

He waited for her to continue.

"Because when you see me - " Yael said.

"Don't say it - "

"You see Maya!" she yelled. "I look like her!"

He looked away in frustration. Then he covered his eyes and rubbed his temples with a heavy sigh.

"Go! If you want, go!"

"I will," he said, getting up.

"Go!"

"Goodbye, Yael," Duncan said to her.

And he left.
