Scent of people could be helpful with knowing around what kind of people you are. Imagine your crush walking towards you with a pleasant smell and that would deepen your attraction towards him and get a hint of what kind of person he is. Or he smells really bad, that would be not so attractive. Like smelling people is not bad!!
