Those lost in the desert will only be found by death.
The year is 764.
The city of Rey rises from the ashes of rebellion, but Al-Khayzuran and Prince Rehan al-Mahdi reel from a devastating loss. Their friend and ally, Yahya al-Barmaki, is lost to an unknown foe.
As the search for him grows more and more futile, Khayzuran's family enters the Round City of Baghdad in search of her, armed only with the letter detailing her fantastical fate. When a series of political assassinations threaten to spark war with the old enemy of the Caliphate, the Byzantine empire, Khaya and Rehan must fight to protect their family and kingdom from the oncoming scourge.
Meanwhile, shackled in the temple of darkness, Yahya bides his time for escape despite an earth-shattering revelation that all but unravelled the fabric of his identity, and the magnetic fascination he has for his enemy's lieutenant.
War will brew with fire in this land so poisoned by the venom of kings.
