Sohee was right that day.
We shouldn't trust people.
And I shouldn't have high hopes.
Because of my curiosity and willingness that day, we ended up at a military base, but only to find that they tricked me into going there because they needed security. I didn't find Taehyung and my Beta Team there, and when I asked about them, that Haneul guy just brushed it off, saying they were dead.
Did I believe them?
No.
But being a responsible man, I stayed there even though Sohee wanted us to flee. She didn't like that stuffy base. She said they were suspicious. But at last, she also agreed to stay since she knew I wanted to stay there to help people, and she wanted my help to find the girl named Moon. I wondered why she trusted me that much and only wanted my help.
It took six weeks, though. And I didn't know how, but walkers overran us, and when Sohee and I came from a run, we saw the whole place on fire. I saw Sergeant Choi Haneul with one leg, crawling on the floor, growling loudly.
Sohee decided it was time for us to flee. And we drove away, not giving a single glance back at that place, and made a deal to find the Moon girl and my best friend.
We started our journey. A rough one, if I must say.
We crossed paths with survivors many times, but they always took advantage of us. They either stole from us or tried to harm us.
The word humanity doesn't exist anymore. People were cruel, only thinking about their well-being.
And on top of that, Sohee created an enemy for us in the chaos we were in. They were called Dolda, a group of gangsters who one day stole our car, which made Sohee furious since it was one of her father's and ended up burning down their camp. Ever since, they had been hunting us, trying to kill us.
Hiding from the enemy, walkers, and cunning survivors, we spent a year with no progress, only trying to survive.
I reached over to the gun holster belt and took my gun, eyeing at the legs of the walkers who passed by the car. Their paces were slow, unlike the first few days, which I noticed. Maybe they became vulnerable because of not getting enough food, like how humans become vulnerable due to having no food.
I had been hiding under the car for hours, keeping quiet as much as I could. I barely let out my breaths because I didn't want them to get distracted; they might not get distracted by my breaths, but I didn't want to take any risk. I even switched off my walkie-talkie in case it wouldn't be loud if Sohee tried to radio me.
It was a sensitive situation that I had to handle using my brain.
Brushing the salty sweat on my forehead, which threatened to fall to my temple, I bit on my lower lip and roved my eyes everywhere as soon as I noticed that there were fewer walkers than before. It might take them a few more minutes to pass this street and down to the highway, which meant I had to wait for a little longer than I expected.
