from her desk, and there he is. In the armchair by the window, reading a book, his glasses at the tip of his nose. And she smiles, she can't help it. The way the morning light kisses his cheek. Her skittish tabby curled at his feet. It's the scene she's imagined her whole life.

He looks up, sees her watching him across the studio apartment. Intimate, he'd called it. She meets his eyes. He meets her smile. Her cheeks flush, just a little. She looks back to her work, but her smile remains. She can't help it.

What are you smiling about? he says.

She shakes her head without looking up. Don't ruin it, she says, and smiles bigger.
