THE MORNING was the same as the previous. Get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, and down to training they went.

Unlike yesterday, the tributes were already practicing by the time they got down. All of them were supposed to be down by 9 and they were ten minutes early so it was a shock to see them already working.

River parted from Aster, going off to the fire starting station. When she walked over, she saw a girl already there.

With her dark, brunette hair and it being braided to the side, it wasn't hard to label her as Katniss Everdeen, the girl from District 12.

"Hi." River spoke up, startling the girl focused on starting a fire. "Sorry, but I noticed— you're really good at that." She told Katniss and she only nodded.

"Yeah, my dad taught me." With the saddened tone in her voice, River knew not to pry further.

Instead, she flashed a closed lip smile, leaning down to her level on the ground. "Could you maybe teach me?"

Katniss studied her face, trying to find any signs that she was joking or about to tease her. But there was none. Only a girl with a sweet smile.

"Sure." She excepted, positioning the stick back onto the small log. "Aren't you Finnicks sister?" Katniss asked, remembering her from watching the reaping tapes.

"That would be me." River replied with a breathy laugh, nodding her head towards the ground.

"I saw you volunteer for your sister. That was a very brave thing to do." River steered the conversation away from her and back onto the District 12 girl.

It was now Katniss' turn to look at the ground. "Mhm." She hummed. "I couldn't let her. She's everything to me."

River smiled at her words. She knew if Finnick could've volunteered for her, he would've. But since he exceeded the age limit and was already a Victor, it was impossible. But even if he wasn't, she'd rather die than him.

"Anyway, back to the fire." River chuckled, a smile lifting on Katniss' lips. "So, put your hands flat against both sides." The brunette instructed, letting River take the lead.

After a few failed attempts, she got the hang of it. River couldn't help but feel a smile creep up on her lips as the fire ignited. "You did it." Katniss smiled back, giving the District 4 girl a small high five.

Interrupting their interaction was the sound of a slicing sword and a grunt. Their heads whipped to see Cato pulling back his sword after impaling a dummy.

River would've laughed but didn't considering she wanted Katniss to take her seriously.

"I'll— I'll see you later, Katniss." She gave a subtle smile and Katniss waved goodbye, seeming to continue setting up some sort of trap.

She found a rack of tridents, picking one up and examining it some. It was a lot lighter than what she used in her district, having to toss it between hands to have an idea of how she was to use it in combat.

As she began walking to a trainer, a familiar blonde girl stepped in front of her. "Hi, River." Glimmer gave a sick smirk, crossing her arms as she tried to intimidate the District 4 girl.

River wasn't surprised, waiting for her to continue. Glimmers smirk dropped. "Whatever is going on with Cato needs to stop. It's not getting you anywhere." The girl snapped, keeping her voice quiet.

"Good to know you care so much. I was worried it'd be a distraction." River answered before shrugging. "Or am I the distraction for you?"

Glimmers eyes narrowed, her nostrils flaring at Rivers retaliation. "Have fun caring so much." River gave a smile and when she went to walk away, Glimmer grabbed her arm.

Before she could say anything, a voice stopped her. "Let her go." River eyes snapped to Cato who was pulling Glimmer away from her.

"Cato... we're just having girl talk." Glimmer innocently said, batting her lashes at him as if he had yelled at her.

"Listen to your girl, Cato. Might get you somewhere." River met his eyes one last time before heading to her original task.

It was a no brainer Glimmer was jealous. But River was used to it. The girls back home were always envious of her because of Finnick like she was dating him. Her brother? It was mind boggling.

After finding a trainer to practice with, the two began clashing the weapons together.

At the first collision, River had felt her fingers tighten around the trident, her muscles straining against his attempts to hit her. The trainer was definitely doing his job, River shocked he was actually training and not going easy on her.

River dodged by moving out of the way to jumping and rolling to avoid being hit. It wasn't like anyone could get seriously hurt since they couldn't actually hurt one another which made it less scary.
