2 - A Leaf in the Wind

Korra's PoV

"And, in the final round, the Buzzard Wasps won with a decisive knockout!" I read the newspaper excitedly. Lowering it down, I look up at Tenzin, smiling. "What do you say we go to the arena tonight, catch a few pro-bending matches?"

"That sport is a mockery of the noble tradition of bending" he says dismissively, taking a sip from his cup of tea as we eat breakfast in the dining room

"Come on, Tenzin! I've dreamed about seeing a pro-bending match since I was a kid," I give him a pleading look. It would be awesome to finally go to match. "and now I'm just a ferry ride away from the arena" I point out of the window towards the arena

"Korra, you're not here to watch that drivel. You're here to finish your Avatar training," he says decisively. I frown disappointedly. "So, for the time being, I want you to remain on the island"

"Is that why you're keeping the White Lotus sentries around," I grunt annoyed. Waving my hand at their direction. They were everywhere. "to watch my every move?"

"Yes," he says calmly before clearing his throat with hesitancy. "But Lin and I were talking and we think, to ensure your safety, you'll be safer with also an officer staying close to you at all times"

"A bodyguard?" I almost shout indignantly, slamming my hand on the table. A few acolytes turn to look at us. "Tenzin, I'm the Avatar. I don't need a babysitter"

"It's not a babysitter, Korra," he sighs exasperated. "You might not like it but it is for your own safety, and it's not negotiable. She'll be here soon," he, once again, says decisively and I knew I wouldn't be able to convince him otherwise. "Please Korra, none of us want to see you get hurt" his tone softens, and it was the genuine worry in it the only reason I was even letting it happen

"I don't need protecting," I muttered indignantly and with arrogance. Crossing my arms and looking away. "And who is this new bodyguard anyway?"

"Your apparently already met her. Mira Sonnen" he says calmly almost gently

"Mira!?" I ask surprise. She's my new bodyguard? I mean she seems cool and I really liked her when we met. It could be fun to have her around

"Yes. I ask Lin for her best officer to ensure your safety and it is Mira. She may be a non-bender but she can hold up herself really well in a fight with one" he says with a hint of pride in his voice... and care. Apparently Mira not only knew Beifong but also Tenzin and his family

"She's a non-bender?" I look at him puzzled. I assumed she was one, if she was part of Beifong's officers. I thought she was a metalbender. She must be really good fighter if she can stand up against a bender

"She is, and she's coming here to ensure you stay safe while we focus on your training," he nods. "In order to learn airbending I believe you require a calm, quiet environment, free from any distractions. A safe environment"

"All right, you're the master" I sigh, smiling softly at him. If he thinks this is the best, I will give it a try

After breakfast I changed into the typical air nomad attire and walked with Tenzin towards the training area. But as we walk through the hallways he asks me a question I really didn't want to answer

"So, my mother informed me that you've never been able to airbend before" his voice was gentle, understanding. There wasn't judgement in it but it didn't stop me from feeling like a failed

"Yeah, but I don't know why. The other elements came so easily to me," I run the back of my head frustrated. "but every single time I've tried airbending nothing" I mumble annoyed
