(This Is Where They Went)
Korri POV
"Okay," I say, my hanging body swinging from the ceiling. "We did good?"
Mars stays quiet.
"You alive?"
He frowns. "I am very well alive... Sane though? Not sure."
"You did awesome, you certainly kicked the crap out of that vampire."
Didn't think you had it in you.
"Vampire's don't like... well, whatever I did." he mumbles. "They are weakened by positivity for some unknown reason. My mother sang those lullabies to me, so I had a positive memory attached to it"
"Well, either way, Apollo would've been impressed, and he's the god over that stuff."
Mars laughs so hard he's shaking. "I agree, but under no circumstances are we telling him about this.
"Okay, fine by me." Things hurt. "But I wanna ask you something."
"'Kay, fire away, but i-it isn't exactly the time..."
"There they are!" a fairly high, slurred voice says, her voice sing-songy. "We were looking for you."
The pain in my leg spikes, and I bite back a cry.
Hard.
Mars. I say. What weapons or sharp things do you have?
Uh... I can nearly see the gears in his head spin. I have a dagger... a soft thought escapes him. From ironically Aphrodite...
Why would that be ironic?
Never mind. He snaps. I have a mace, but I doubt that'll be helpful.
Okay, the dagger'll work. I say. Cut up your rope, and then do me?
'Kay, he frowns. Will you keep the vampire distracted?
I look at him. Sure.
"Hey," I say. "Creepy chick. Who or what in the Hades are you?"
"A vampire, dummy." That seemed to piss her off.
Her voice seems different from the first vampire.
It seems desperate and broken.
"Now shut it." she hisses.
"If," I say, "if I'm gonna die tonight, then I'm gonna ask and say everything on my mind. So," I give her a mock-pity look, "no."
Okay, Mars breathes. I'm free enough to bust out, but we have no defense. And I am not singing again-
We have no need to, Ares. I snap. Sorry, I'm just not used to this telepathy thing-
My leg burns again.
I can't hold back the wussy whimper that escapes my mouth.
"QUIT TORMENTING HER!" Mars shouts, and the flames brighten for a second revealing the vampire's face.
I recognize her.
Claire Sage.
She disappeared when I was what? Ten?
Two short years ago.
A year after the disappearances started.
I remember where I had heard the first vampire's voice before.
He was Ben Wilson.
He was the kid who teamed up with Lydia that morning.
That morning when...
When things went weird.
Then awesome?
The vampires...
Are the missing kids.
And this is where they went.
