Good communication is KEY (always tell them what you're thinking and talk to them as much as you can)
Don't complain too much; avoid being sentimental but show them signs of affection.
Show them how you're different from others. This could be through your interests or any skill/talent you may have.
Always ask them questions. Even the most random questions, they'll be more than happy to answer. And ask them for their opinion on things!
Show them you care. If you make plans, do your best to not cancel them. They'll understand if something comes up and you can't make it... But if this gets repetitive, they'll be annoyed. They have a strong sixth sense when it comes to things like this. They'll see through lies or false pretences quite easily.
Tell them stuff. Sometimes they need time to open up and develop trust. If you tell them stuff and show that you trust them, they'll be inclined to do the same. Don't ask them for things in return because they don't like be doubted or being told to do things they don't want to do.
