Loneliness is a disease.

And it's quite a cruel one. You see, unlike other ailments that merely damage your physical tissue, loneliness prefers to fester deep within its host's soul. It nestles there like a parasite, typically manifesting itself in those deemed weak or inferior by the standards of society. Then it extends its tendrils, seeking to contaminate whatever vulnerabilities it can find.

If left untreated for too long, the victim can break. This stage of the process is exceptionally dangerous and the outcomes are variable. While most find themselves spiralling into depths of hopelessness and self-destruction, other seek a path of vengeance and hatred against the world. Their bitter estrangement begins to breed thoughts of degeneracy, lust and intense desperation.

Luckily, this disease is curable - but only for some. For others, those like yourself, help is a seemingly impossible feat. So you learn to accept it and welcome it as an inseparable part of your existence.

Perhaps there was once a time where you yearned for connection; a time where you wished to see yourself reflected in the loving gaze of another human being's eyes, a time where you craved the warmth of someone else's body against your own, a time where you still had hope. But those desires had since dissolved, becoming relics of a childishly optimistic past.

Now you sought relief in the cold isolation. At least in this loveless void, you never had to worry about disappointing people, humiliating yourself or becoming emotionally wounded. In a way, your separation from society had become a disillusioned act of self-preservation.

And you were okay with this?

Yes.

Because... you weren't completely alone.

There was a place where you could be something more. A place beyond the physical world.

A digital landscape full of users eager to befriend and engage with each other. The restraints of social anxiety bore no weight on you in this realm. You were finally free to express yourself however you wanted. Each day could be a new aesthetic, a new profile, a new account, a new personality. Chatrooms, MMOs, servers, games, social media... All of it was enough to replenish the little social need you had left. The perfect escape from your miserable reality.

And, of course, there was more to it than that. Amidst the colourful, dopamine-inducing notifications and invites, there was one person in particular that you held dear to your heart. A user that stood out from the rest of your friend list. Kitty.
