The armor changing throughout the ages easily allowing the differences to be spotted. The men who refused to move on to the other side, having their regrets and their bitterness. They were supposed to act as mentors to the new holders of the mantle if he reached out to them. Or remain as part of the stone holding the volatile magical item together. Having their history etched into the walls they couldn't escape. These warriors learning to call upon their armor after decades of having nothing else to do.
