Chapter 20; The Stranger at Home...

The sleep I fell into on top of my exhaustion had caused a short-term memory loss, I suppose. The presence of the unwelcome guest in my home seemed as if it had never happened in that short amount of time. It was such a peaceful waking moment. Unfortunately, it only lasted for a few short minutes. As my senses began to awaken, the clatter from the kitchen shattered all of my happiness. The thought of not being alone in the house brought back memories of yesterday. My peaceful smiles turned to sadness. The half partition that only covered about eight to ten steps away from me had my head guard taking over the watch again.

His presence was a problem in itself, and now he was threatening to turn my tiny but dear kitchen into a battlefield. He was threatening anything related to me! I was going crazy on the inside, just like my treacherous friends, and even my stomach wasn't taking my side. Long-lasting hunger had caused it to surrender to the smell of the menemen that was being cooked.

"Zey, we both know there is no way that smell won't wake you up. Let's have breakfast now! Look, I made it just the way you like it; without onions and with the ingredients roughly chopped."

Before I could even open my eyes, he had to hit me where it hurt the most. If he kept going, my stomach's unpleasant twists and turns would turn into screams of rebellion. Nevertheless, I didn't lift my head off the pillow. My attitude might have seemed childish, but my concern was elsewhere. I had a serious problem that I didn't have time to think about last night.

Although I told Kıvanç to find a place to stay right away, I knew he wouldn't step out of the house for the next two critical days. His behavior and effort from last night had shown this clearly. So, how was I going to handle my work while he was constantly underfoot? Tracking Hikmet was one thing, talking to Elif and my instructor was another matter altogether. And if I had come to the right conclusion about a detail I caught during the last conversations I listened to, there would also be an autopsy that I would want to add to the investigation file. Even though just wanting this autopsy would break my heart, I would do it. Because the result of that autopsy could be the secret key to the doors I was trying to open for revenge. It could ensure both me and my father's peaceful sleep and enable me to finish what I had started...

Carmen's voice broke into my thoughts. "I thought he would be the first one to wake up. Is he still asleep?" Carmen, who was not used to sleeping for a long time, was ready to worry as much as she was surprised.

While the chief traitor and head guard continued to tinker in my kitchen, they were also chatting. How lovely!

Kıvanç clarified the matter. "I think he hasn't been sleeping for a while, but I can't be sure he's lifted his head from the pillow he buried it in. Do you want to give us a sign, Zey? Or should I come and check?"

I showed Kıvanç the middle finger as the sign he was expecting from me, while lying down. I think it was a well-deserved attitude that I displayed. If he had just come into my room, it would have been perfect! By the way, I also cursed the person who invented glass bricks and the mindset that uses these things outside of workplaces, kitchens, balconies, and similar areas. What happened to the modesty of the house? We weren't in the Big Brother house, were we? Wasn't there supposed to be peace even in the bedroom? Following this logic, we should have made the entire house out of glass and opened it to the public!

"It doesn't seem like he's sleeping as I expected, but I guess he couldn't fully get his beauty sleep. He doesn't look very happy," she didn't neglect to give a status report, accompanied by a loud laugh. I had no doubt that she knew it would further aggravate my already irritated nerves, constantly seeking something to be upset about.
