The rebels moved swiftly through the night, their footsteps echoing softly in the darkness as they made their way towards their new hideout. The air was thick with tension and exhaustion, but also with a sense of relief that they had escaped the Valorian Army's relentless pursuit.

As they reached the outskirts of the village, Maria Cortez called for a halt, her voice cutting through the quiet of the night. The rebels gathered around her, their faces weary but determined.

"We'll rest here for the night," Maria said, her voice carrying a note of authority. "We need to regroup and plan our next move."

Alex Parker nodded in agreement, feeling the weight of exhaustion settling in his bones. They had been through a harrowing ordeal, and he knew they needed time to recover.

The rebels set up a makeshift camp, gathering around a small fire to warm themselves against the chill of the night. The crackling of the flames was a comforting sound, a small respite from the chaos and violence they had faced.

As they settled in, Maria approached Alex, her expression serious. "We need to talk," she said, her voice low.

Alex nodded, gesturing for her to sit beside him by the fire. "What's on your mind, Maria?"

She took a deep breath, her gaze steady as she met his eyes. "I appreciate everything you've done for us, Mr. Parker," she began. "But I can't shake the feeling that we have a traitor among us."

Alex's heart skipped a beat at her words. A traitor? The thought sent a chill down his spine, his mind racing with possibilities. "What makes you say that?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Maria glanced around the camp, her eyes scanning the faces of the rebels gathered around the fire. "There have been too many close calls, too many instances where the Valorian Army seemed to know our movements," she explained. "I fear that someone in our midst is feeding them information."

Alex's mind raced as he considered her words. A traitor in their ranks would explain a lot, but it also meant they were in even greater danger than they realized. "Do you have any suspects?" he asked, his voice tense.

Maria shook her head, her expression troubled. "I don't know," she admitted. "But we need to find out before it's too late."

Alex nodded in agreement, his mind already working on a plan. "I'll see what I can find out," he said, determination burning in his eyes.

The following day, Alex set out to gather information, his senses on high alert as he moved through the village. He spoke with villagers, listened to their conversations, and observed the comings and goings of the Valorian Army's soldiers.

As he moved among the villagers, Alex couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled over him. The Valorian Army's presence was palpable, their influence casting a shadow over the village.

One afternoon, as he made his way through the market, Alex overheard snippets of conversation that caught his attention. A group of villagers was gathered around a well, their voices hushed as they spoke in low tones.

"... heard that Maria Cortez is leading the rebels," one of them said, her voice filled with fear.

"Maria Cortez? The same one who used to work for the Valorian Army?" another voice chimed in.

Alex's heart skipped a beat at their words. Maria had never mentioned her past with the Valorian Army. Could she be the traitor they were looking for?

Determined to find out the truth, Alex approached the group of villagers, his heart pounding in his chest. "Excuse me, can I ask you a question?" he said, trying to keep his voice steady.

The villagers turned to him, their eyes wary but curious. "What do you want to know?" one of them asked.

"I heard you mention Maria Cortez," Alex said, keeping his tone casual. "What can you tell me about her?"

The villagers exchanged uneasy glances before one of them spoke up. "Maria used to work for the Valorian Army," she said, her voice low. "But she disappeared a few years ago and resurfaced as a rebel leader."

Alex's mind raced with the implications of this revelation. If Maria had a past with the Valorian Army, could she be the one feeding them information? The thought sent a chill down his spine, but he knew he needed to find out more before jumping to conclusions.

Thanking the villagers for their information, Alex slipped away, his mind spinning with possibilities. He needed to confront Maria, to confront the possibility that she was the traitor they had been searching for.

That evening, as the rebels gathered around the campfire, Alex approached Maria, his heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. "Maria, we need to talk," he said, his voice low.

She turned to him, her brow furrowed in confusion. "What is it, Mr. Parker?"

Alex took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he was about to say. "I heard something today," he began, his voice barely above a whisper. "About your past with the Valorian Army."

Maria's eyes widened in surprise, her expression guarded. "What did you hear?" she asked, her voice steady but tense.

Alex hesitated, unsure of how to proceed. "I heard that you used to work for them," he said finally. "That you disappeared and resurfaced as a rebel leader."

Maria's eyes narrowed, her gaze intense as she met his. "And what does that have to do with anything?" she asked, her voice tinged with anger.

Alex took a step closer, his gaze unwavering. "It means that you could be the traitor," he said, his voice low but firm.
