Mark Hansen just struggled to show emotion, Evan Hansen convinced himself. Even when Mark was still around, he never really cared when Evan would fall off his bike or be scared or cry or…

Okay. Maybe Mark isn’t the best dad in the world. Evan learned this. He had to teach himself this after the third time he saw one of his drawings in the trashcan in Mark’s home office.

Yeah. Mark Hansen definitely wasn’t winning any father of the year awards anytime soon.

Which made the mysterious package on the table from Mark even more odd. Heidi stood in the kitchen, not so discreetly watching Evan just stare at
the box.

Sure, it was Evan’s 17th birthday. He’s almost a man. But Mark’s never been one to send gifts. Not for Heidi
nor Evan’s birthdays.

The box carried a pair of size 10 Uggs and a half-assed card with a tree on it that said ‘Happy birthday. - Mark.’

But Evan didn’t try to hide the fact he cried over that.

When Evan Hansen walks down the hall at school, he’ll pretend it doesn’t hurt when his shoes get made fun of by literally everyone. He’ll pretend it doesn’t hurt when his family friend Jared Kleinman makes fun of him for them.

But maybe, just maybe, Evan could convince himself maybe Mark Hansen really does love him.
