CHAPTER THREE

"Penny. Penny, wake up!"

Margot stood over her daughter, shaking the girl until she wiggled away. "Penny, we need to go."

"What..." Penny trailed off as Margot dragged her out of bed, forcing her into longer nightgown. She squinted her eyes as bells rang through Avonlea. "What's going on?"

"There's a fire in town," Margot explained, quickly untying Penny's hair curlers until her blonde hair fell down by her waist. "Your father and Christian have taken the horses town to help."

"Shouldn't we go too?" Penny asked.

Margot's shaking fingers tied Penny's hair into two braids as fast as she could. "We will. But you can't run into the town with hair curlers still in your hair and in your pajamas. You'll look unsophisticated."

Penny glanced down at the nightgown her mother shoved her into. "I am still in pajamas."

"Yes, but now your in clean ones." Margot stepped back admiring her work. "Now, go downstairs and fetch the buckets from the basement. We'll bring them down to down with the carriage."

Penny rushed out of her room, as she gathered five buckets in total and began to load them into the horse and cart, she frowned at the fact her mother valued making sure she looked good over whoever's house was currently burning. Maybe she brushed out Christian's hair before he left and made him change into smarter clothes.

The pair left the house on top of a carriage. Penny continued peering ahead of her until a glowing yellow shape poked through the darkness. As the carriage pulled up, Penny widened her eyes in shock. "This is Ruby's house."

"Okay, start unloading the buckets," Margot ordered.

Penny was to busy gazing at the scene to hear, her jaw dropped in shock. Roaring golden flames burned brightly out of the house. Windows shatters, planks of wood separated from the rest of the house. Flames engulfed the top half of the house, black smoke spewing out of the windows on the bottom half.

Penny finally tore her eyes away as she spotted her brother. He was covered in black dust as he ran out of the house, a girl over his shoulder. Penny jumped out of the carriage running towards him. "Did you go into the house? Are you mad!"

"Ruby was still inside." Christian kneeled down on the grass, on his hands and knees, heaving in deep breaths of air and gagging up the smoke stuck in his lungs. "I couldn't leave her in there."

Penny watched as Ruby pulled her brother in for a hug, before she ran back to her family. Penny looked down at her brother in shock. "You ran into a burning house to save her?"

"What can I say?" Beneath the dust coating his face, he managed a cocky grin. "You better worship me now that I saved your friend."

Two black shapes rushed towards Penny, Diana and Anne sprinted towards her.

"Everyone's out now," Diana yelled. "Your brother saved Ruby."

"I know." Penny's face dropped subtly. "He's never going to shut up about it now."

Christian rolled his eyes, using a muddy glove to ruffle her hair.

"Why are the windows and doors open?" Anne thought out loud.

"Does it make a difference?" Diana asked.

"A big one."

The two girls watched as Anne ran back to her cart, grabbing towels before dumping them in water. Penny furrowed her eyebrows, exchanging a look with Diana.
