Chapter 1
Crossing the Parapet

Zara swung her rucksack over her shoulder as she approached the area for the Parapet. Zara was a beautiful young woman and was known as the Princess of Navarre and second in line for the trone, but she wanted to be a dragon rider and not deal with the politics of court. Zara's father could't real her in as she trained and finally gave in even though he lost his second born to the Quardrant two years before. Zara had auburn red hair that was down to her waiste, but one unique thing about her features was she had one icy blue eye and the other was green. She was loved by her brothers, but they supported her decision to join the Rider Quadrant with her best friend Violet Sorrengail. She had been running a bit late and heard Violet was already heading up.

"Zara." Zara turned and saw Mira waving at her. Mira came up and hugged her friend. With Mira and Violet's mom being general and coming to see the king. All the kids grew up togehter and were all friends. "Good luck. I'm still surprised your father is letting you do this."

"You know I don't do well with the politics of the Court. I rather have been learning to spar or have my nose in a book." Zara shrugged. Mira chuckled. "Violet heading up?"

"Yes. Keep an eye on her for me. I'm worried with Riorson for both of you." Mira said. Zara remembered her father giving the orders for the leaders of the Tyrrish Rebellion executed and the children that were to live to watch as their families were killed. Her father forced her and her brothers to watch as it happened. Zara never approved of what her father did. She felt there were stuff that was being kept from the people.

"We'll be fine, Mira. I'll keep an eye on Violet." Zara said. Mira hugs Zara. Mira leaves and Zara stood in line. Some people were eying her. Zara kept her head forward. Zara ran a hand down her chest where her daggers were. She had one on each thigh. The line moved forward. Zara felt her excitement as she got closer to climb the stairs to the Parapet.

"Next." The woman said. Zara moved up to the table. "Name."

"Zara Tauri." Zara said. The woman's head snapped up and some heads turned.

"Tauri?" The woman said.

"As in?" Another rider said.

"Yes. I'm King Tauri's daughter." Zara said, grabbing a quill and wrote down her name.

"I'm surprised he let you after your brother died." The woman said.

"He's got two other sons besides me." Zara said, putting down the quill. Zara didn't look back as she headed for the stairs to make the climb to the Parapet. Zara looked up. It was a long way up. Zara took a deep breath as she started walking up the stairs behind other patential Cadets. Zara didn't interact with any of the cadets as she headed for the top. The rain was coming down. Zara was happy she got new boots that were slip resistant.

At the top. There were three guys standing together. Zara quickly reconized one as Xaden Riorson. She saw him when her father made them watch as the leaders of the rebellion were executed in front of their children. The guy next to him looked almost like Xaden with tawny brown skin and curly black hair. That must of been his cousin, Bodhi. Zara had to admit both boys were handsome now, but her eyes lingered on Bodhi for a bit. Zara looked away when he looked in her direction. Zara shifted from one foot to the other as she held her strap to her rucksack. The person in front moved to get to the parapet. Zara stepped up next.
