WORDS 1133

[18] "I know it's 2am but can we meet up?"
_____

Being an intern for McLaren is something I never imagined I could archive, but here I am accompanying them to races, visit the tracks and learn as much as possible for my future. Another positive thing is that I got to meet the drivers and instantly clicked with Lando. At first I just though he was being nice, but texting with him late night, laughing and even being in contact outside of a race weekend proved me different and so a great friendship evolved.

Right now I am sleeping, trying to fill up my batteries before the race when something wakes me up. Desintorient I blink a couple of times, before realiising a sound woke me up. "What is this noise?" I mutter to myself, before my brain connects that my phone is ringing. Groggily I grab it and see the time.

"It's 2AM, whoevers this is better has a good excuse. to wake me up in the middle of the night." It Lando who is calling me and I lift one of my eyebrows.

"Lando?" I asks into the phone, followed up by a "What do you want?"

"I know it's 2am but can we meet up?" LAndo asks hesitatingly and I am not sure if he really means what he just said. It is the middle of the night and normal people sleep at that time of the day.

"Are you serious?"

"I am sorry, I just wanted..." He trails off and decides to say something different.

"I will no longer disturb you." LAndo sighs and I am sure he just wants to end the call when I manage to say out a "Wait."

"Give me a few minutes to properly wake up and send me your room number." I tell him even though I am sure I will regret this decision when the alarm rings in the morning, but it seems like Lando needs someone to talk with and if he chose me I will be there for him.

"You are the best!" Lando exclaims and I smile, liking the fact that he realy things so great about me. Slowly I get out of bed, grab one of my jogging pants and put on my McLaren hoodie. I dont feel awake enough for a proper conversation, so I go to the bathroom and splash some cold water in my face, before fixing my hair into a bun.

Taking a deep breath, before putting on my shoes and stepping out of the room. I look at my phone to see that Lando did send me his room number, 416, si I make my way to the elevator to get to the fourth floor.

After some searching I reach his door and knock on it before I wait. Nothing happens. I knock again and there is again no sound coming from behind the door. "He better not fall back asleep." I mutter to myself, ready to turn around and leave again, when someone behind me speaks up.

"I didn't, but I got us some ice-cream." I flinch because of it before I turn around to look at Lando who holds some ice-cream in one of his hands while he fiddles out his room card with the other. We enter his room together and sit down on the sofa since he has an apartment like room all for himself. He doesnt speak up, just hands me the ice cream and a spoon and so we sit here in the middle of the night and eat ice cream together.

"So, what's wrong Lando?" I ask him to figure out why he called me in the middle of the night, but Lando just shrugs his shoulders.

"What should be wrong?" He asks back, keeps eating and avoids my eyes. I lfit one of my eyebrows, he cant be serious right now.

"You called me at 2AM, you better have a good reason for it." I remind him of the time and that he woke me up. Lando shuffles in his seat, seems to be hesitating about speaking up, before he manages to whisper two words.

"The race."

This answer surprises me. "YOu are worried about the race?" I ask him to be sure and add a slightly confused "Why?"

"My performance, Oscar being better, disappointing the team and the fans." Lando brings up the list of things he worries about and my face softens. Oh LAndo.

"Disappointing yourself." I conclude, making him lift his head and mutters a "What?"

"Well, I guarantee you it takes a lot for your fans to be disappointed. If Oscar is better you are happy for him and beat him next time and your team knows no one, except for maybe Max, can be perfect." I explain my conclusion to him. His fans love him and he would probably need to do a lot of bad things to disappoint most of them. Of course there are always those who will beat him up with words when there is one race in which he doesnt perform well, but real fans will accept the fact that he can bring the same performance every weekend.

The thing with Oscar is something I understand as well. He is younger, Landos teammate and Lando was used to learn a lot in the beginning, not really beating his teammates when he started F1 so he is worried about Oscar beating him right away. But the truth is, Oscar will need more experience for a consistent performance and until this happens Lando can be happy for his teammate.

"Chin up and focus on the positive bits." I tell Lando and touch his chin lightly and just for a second, but he still doesnt look happy with the situation.

"Which ones?" He asks with a defeated undertone and I worry that he feels this bad during a night before a race. Hopefully all his thoughts and the lack of sleep will not affect the outcome of the race.

"Me eating ice-cream with you at 2AM." I tell him a positive thing and a soft smile appears on his lips.

"Yeah, that helps." He mutters and I cant do anything but smile back at him. Luckily this one helped him, because I am way too tired to pull out a full motivation speak.

"Thank you." Lando sounds genuliy thankful that I spend time with him that late and that I managed to say something that helped him.

"Every time, Lando, but please if you need someone to talk to, call sooner." I cant stop myself from telling his this with a little chuckle, because I am sure he had this thoughts way earlier than at 2 AM. Land laughst softly as well, leaning back on the couch and finally seems to be relaxing.

"I promise."
