The weight of the day pressed down on me as I tried to process everything that had happened. We were supposed to be celebrating, but now our lives had been turned upside down. I needed a distraction, something to ground me. I picked up the remote and turned on the TV, hoping for some mindless background noise. Instead, I was met with a breaking news report.
"Today, a shocking incident occurred at a local high school graduation. Gunfire erupted, leaving several injured and at least two dead. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the violence, but initial reports suggest it may be linked to organized crime."
I felt my heart drop. Two people dead. Injured. I couldn't believe it. Tears welled up in my eyes as the reality of the situation hit me all over again. I was supposed to be normal again. I turned off the TV and stood up, needing to move, to do something.
Without thinking, I made my way upstairs. I needed reassurance, something to hold onto. I knocked lightly on the door, then pushed it open when there was no response. The room was steamy, the shower still running. As I stepped inside, D'Angelo emerged from the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist, water dripping from his hair.
"Kylie," he said, with surprise and concern in his voice. "What's wrong?"
I couldn't hold back the tears any longer. "I just saw the news. People are dead because of this. Because of us."
He walked over, his expression softening. "Come here," he said gently, pulling me into his arms. The warmth of his body against mine was comforting, but it also made everything feel more real. I started to sob, the emotions of the day overwhelming me.
"I'm so scared, D'Angelo," I admitted through my tears. "I don't know how to deal with this. I don't know what's going to happen to us."
He held me tighter, his hand stroking my hair. "I know, Kylie. I know. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I never wanted any of you to be involved."
"Why didn't you tell us?" I asked, my voice breaking. "We could have helped you, prepared somehow."
"I thought I could keep you safe by keeping you out of it," he said, his voice heavy with regret. "I didn't want this life for you."
I pulled back slightly, looking up at him. "I'm scared, D'Angelo. But I also feel... something else. I feel like I need you, like you're the only one who can make this better."
His eyes searched mine, and I saw the same mix of fear and desire reflected back at me. "I need you too, Kylie," he whispered, his voice husky. "More than you know."
Before I could think, before I could question what I was doing, I leaned up and kissed him. It was tentative at first, a desperate need for comfort. But as his lips responded, the kiss deepened, fueled by the adrenaline and raw emotion of the day.
His hands moved to my waist, pulling me closer, and I felt the heat between us intensify. For a moment, everything else faded away-the fear, the danger, the uncertainty. It was just us, clinging to each other in the midst of the chaos.
