The count of days she'd been locked up had been lost in her memory. The days were the same, with little to no changes. River couldn't recall the last time her eyes had seen the outside world. The Sky Box was her new reality, whether she had liked it for the past year or not. The so called Sky Box held the teenage criminals of The Ark. Some were in for stealing, others were there for treason, and someone was even in for the simply thing of being born. The girl under the floor, as people called her. Her real name was Octavia Blake. For the first 16 years of her life, she'd hid underneath the floor of her home, which is where she got the nickname from. On The Ark, it wasn't allowed to have more than one child per household. But when reality set in, and a mother gets pregnant, after she'd already had a son, there wasn't many options.
While there was plenty of people who had heard of Octavia, it seemed nobody really knew her.
All except River Johnson.
The cold metal wall met her skin and caused a shiver to burst over River's body. The freezing atmosphere was something River had grown used to over the past year. At first, she'd thought it would get better with time. But to her own defeat, it stayed as cold as day one.
"Do you really think we're ever gonna get out of this hell hole?" Octavia Blake sat across the cell, slouching with boredom in her bed.
River's eyes found Octavia's and she shrugged, as some of her blonde locks fell over her shoulders. If she was being honest, she wasn't convinced they ever would be let out. But she thought quick and decided to keep it to herself, offering her friend a little white lie for her own good.
"Who knows? Maybe."
Octavia was like a little sister to River, and therefore she had an instinct to protect her. Much like Octavia's older brother, Bellamy Blake — River's best friend.
River had grown up in Factory Station, right next door to the Blake's. There had been a time when River had been picked on by a few kids, and Bellamy had been there to stand up for her. Protect her. River remembered the shock she'd felt, seeing as her and Bellamy had never actually spoken before that day. Ever since, Bellamy hadn't left her side.
Their friendship blossomed and soon they were best friends. Although, when it came to his little sister, he'd chosen to keep the secret hidden from River. Not because he didn't trust her, rather because he didn't want to take any chances when it involved his little sister.
So, when the time came for the Masquerade Ball, and Bellamy had sneaked Octavia out of their home, so she could finally see what she'd longed so long for, River had no clue that she was his sister. It was only when Octavia ended up getting caught and arrested that same day, that Bellamy finally revealed the truth to River.
