In Thoughtful Anticipation

There is a significant group of adherents as well as admirers of the Christian faith who share the opinion that the book The Desire of Ages, written by Adventist pioneer Ellen G. White, is by far the most outstanding work extant on the earthly life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The present writer agrees wholeheartedly with this opinion. Chapter 73 of the book is particularly heartwarming. The commentary centers around the 13th to the 17th chapters of the gospel of John. The disciples of Jesus were gathered around Him in the upper chamber. The last supper had just concluded. Judas had left the company for the execution of his carefully laid plot, and Jesus now had just a few hours to address the faithful eleven whose hearts were bound up with His in genuine love and devotion.

The announcement that He was about to depart from them to a place where, for the time being, they were unable to accompany Him filled them with grief and bewilderment. It was at this point that Jesus uttered those words which have since then become a central theme for countless millions of expectant Christians: “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” John 14:1-3.

Approximately 40 days later they were eyewitnesses as He was taken up from among them and received into Heaven. As they stood awestruck, gazing into the Palestine skies, angelic messengers stood by them and assured them that their Master, their Friend, would one day return to earth in the same way they saw Him depart. The inspired commentary tells us that after witnessing this wonderful event, the disciples returned to Jerusalem, not sorrowful and filled with gloom as they were a few weeks before, but full of joy and hope. This was certainly a most remarkable change!
