I woke up on the couch feeling strange. I looked around and I was in the living room but from what I last remembered, I was on my way to my aunt's house. How long had I been here? I couldn't remember a single event that occurred yesterday. It was like my brain knew, but all the events that happened were stored deep into my brain. My mind was fuzzy as I tried hard to remember what happened yesterday.
I got up and looked at my surroundings. I didn't recognize this place exactly, but I knew I had been here before. I went upstairs to see if I could remember anything. Maybe if I saw someone or something it could trigger my memories.
I sat on my bed thinking with a blank expression. I wanted to know how I lost my memories, even if it was a temporary thing. Last I remember, I was on my way to my aunt's house and Mr. Beaumont drove me there. A light bulb shone in my head. Mr. Beaumont! He must know what happened.
I climbed down the stairs and went out to the garden near the gazebo. He was sitting on a chair near a gazebo, peacefully reading a newspaper. I was right behind him but suddenly got nervous. What if he didn't know anything? Maybe I was asking the wrong person. I was about to walk away, but right at that moment he noticed me.
"Is there something you need?" He asked me.
I turned around and made direct contact with him. I decided to ask him.
"Actually... yes. I need to ask you something. Yesterday, I remember coming here then I woke up and I don't remember much? I don't know how to explain. Do you know what happened?"
He gave me a glance with a serious expression. He probably was covering for my aunt as well. He completely ignored my question and didn't bother to answer it. Instead, he looked directly into the newspaper and avoided direct eye contact.
I pleaded, "Mr. Beaumont! If there is anything you know, please tell me. I remember part of what you said yesterday."
He looked back up at me startled. He was nervous and his hand began to fidget. I didn't really know what happened because I have memory loss but I had to test him. He was part of whatever my aunt did to me. I walked away with frustration when he turned back to his newspaper.
I marched to the kitchen looking for my aunt. Anger was boiling inside of me. I clenched my fists to control my temper.
"Aunt Imelda, where are you?" I shouted, trying not to sound mad.
She appeared out of nowhere and walked up close to me. We were only 2 or 3 inches apart.
"What happened to me? I know you did something because Mr. Beaumont was acting suspicious."
She looked at me with piercing eyes. She was thinking about whether I was telling the truth or just saying that to psyche her out.
Aunt Imelda said, "Well what happened is yesterday for your breakfast you must have ate too much or something because you collapsed. And I was scared so I checked your pulse and then I put you on the couch to rest. You were knocked out for nearly a day. I was so worried for you, deary."
From her expressions I could tell she was telling most of the truth. She gave direct eye contact and she didn't look nervous. However, I thought that she exaggerated a bit about her concern for me. She was saying very broadly what happened, not in details. That bothered me because I knew that there was more to this.
I decided to keep this in my mind and not let this incident go because eventually, I would figure out what happened. I was determined. But for now, I would pretend that I completely believed her and was fine now.
"Oh, okay. Thanks Aunt Imelda, I believe you."
I tried to fake a smile but it didn't even look realistic so I ended up hugging her. I saw her expression for a split second. Pure relief.
I just needed her to trust me and not suspect me of knowing the truth so I wouldn't be her target again. I just realized the time as I walked into the living room. It was now 4:36 pm. I was super hungry since I was knocked out. I was going to sneak my food to my room because I didn't want to be near my aunt anymore.
I went over to the fridge and grabbed a soda. Then, I went over to the counter and grabbed a bag of chips. I was in the mood for snacks now. I quickly sneaked past my aunt and went upstairs.
I went up to my room thinking a lot. I liked to look out the window because it was peaceful. I was thinking about my parents. I miss them so much.
As I was logging into my laptop, I realized that school was coming around the corner. I searched for the school nearest to my aunt's house and it was then that I remembered. The school I would be attending was where my parents used to work.
I could definitely find answers there about my parents.
