"Thanks for the video, by the way. Your parents got arrested for child abuse and endangerment. We've gathered enough evidence from the surveillance footage you provided and witness statements to charge them. They'll be facing a trial soon," Mr. Aizawa explained.
"Thanks... Mr. Aizawa," I muttered, feeling relief and sorrow. I sighed deeply.
"I know it must be tough, but you still get to stay at Heights Alliance," he reassured me.
"And what about my sister?" I asked, my worry evident.
"Well, since she is under 18, she must be placed in the adoption center," Mr. Aizawa replied.
"What? No... What if she gets adopted and goes somewhere far? Or worse, what if someone just like my parents adopts her?" My concern was showing.
"I won't let anything like that happen. Trust me. Now, how about you go and check up on your sister?" He patted my back gently, offering some comfort.
I walked off, my mind racing with thoughts about Marinette's future. As I approached the nurse's office, I peeked through the curtain and saw my sister still sleeping. She had been out ever since this afternoon, and now it was dark outside. But what caught my eye was something unexpected.
Bakugou was there, lying on his back with my sister cuddled up against him.
I stared with wide eyes before grabbing a pillow and smacking Bakugou with it.
"What the fuck?" he groaned, turning towards Marinette and pulling her closer to his chest.
"What the heck, Bakugou? That's my sister!" I whispered furiously.
"So?" he mumbled, eyes closed with his face buried in my sister's hair.
"You can't do that! You said you don't like her like that! You—"
"Mhm..." Both of our eyes snapped to Marinette as she whimpered in her sleep.
"No... stop," she cried out softly. I stepped forward, but Bakugou was already sitting up and doing something to calm her.
"Shh, shh... It's okay, Blueberry. You're okay now. Safe and sound," he murmured while gently combing her hair with his fingers. "I've got you, Blue."
He looked up at me when she calmed down, his expression serious. "She's been having nightmares for a while now. This is the only way to calm her down."
"Wow..." I was taken aback, seeing a side of Bakugou I had never seen before.
"Look, Shittyhair," he started, his voice low. "I care about Marinette. Maybe more than I've admitted to myself. And I'm gonna do whatever it takes to make sure she's safe."
"I see," I said, feeling a bit more at ease. "I just... I want her to be happy, you know? She's been through so much."
Bakugou nodded, his eyes softening as he looked down at Marinette. "I know. We'll make sure she is."
Just then, Recovery Girl entered the room, her expression a mix of concern and warmth. "It's good to see both of you here. Marinette needs all the support she can get right now."
"Is she going to be okay?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
"Physically, she'll recover. Emotionally, it will take time. But with her brother and a good friend by her side, she'll have a better chance," Recovery Girl said kindly.
"We'll take care of her," Bakugou and I said almost simultaneously, causing us to exchange a brief, understanding look.
As the night wore on, we stayed by Marinette's side, ensuring she felt safe and loved. Despite the chaos and pain of the past, there was a glimmer of hope that we could build a brighter future for her together.
