Soulmate AU

Lalna's POV

You could say I was worried. It was my 2nd week on the job and my timer was about to go off. 

01 Hour:03 Minutes:16 Seconds

"Bloody hell." I murmured. "I finally found a parking space." I reached out to grab the keys out of the ignition and stepped out of my car. I wonder if it will be a co-worker? I think to myself. My legs carry themselves as my mind races, wondering what will happen.

It has to be someone I haven't met yet, right? And what if they don't like me? I mean, I'm pretty committed to science right now, I don't really have time for a relationship. What if it's a test subject? What if I don't meet anyone?! No, wait. The test subject is the worst. 

I close my eyes and take a breath. It's going to be okay. Now, go to your office and see what you need to do. I walk down the hall and follow the lines on the floor, leading me to the bright, clean, office with my name on it. I step in the door and see my boss waiting for me at the simple oak desk. 

"Good morning Lalna."

"Good morning, I'm ready to get started Xephos!" I say, with as much enthusiasm as I can muster. Xephos chuckled then responded. 

"Well, that's good. I gave you a special case today."

"Hm?" 

"As our best scientists, I made sure it went to you. It's a strange trio we found, trying to sell deeds in the woods outside the lab."

"Doesn't sound very strange to me." I say, looking into his bright blue eyes. They filled at the thought of new discoverys. 

"Yes, well. One of them is a normal man,"

"And...?"

"Let me finish, goddammit!" We both chuckled before Xephos started again.  

"Next we have a walrus, now he isn't just a normal walrus. No, he can talk and walk and do everything a man can! And then we have a slime man blah blah blah blah." Xephos went on and on, thrilled at the new discovery. I looked down at the timer implanted in my wrist. 

00 Hours:14 Minutes:12 Seconds

Only 14 minutes till I meet my soulmate, who knows if this is bollix or not. "Well." I snapped my attention back at Xephos "that should be enough information for now. If you need to review, just read the file. Meet me down there in 10." And with that, he left. 

"10 minutes." I say to myself. "that's enough for coffee." I pick up the file and walk out the door.

"This is a code E. I repeat, this is a code E. Subject 1337 has escaped captivity. Warning: Subject may be hostile, please locate immediately. Subject is contaminated with dangerous substance and must not leave the building." I look up from my papers and hear the alarms blaring. Uh oh, this can't be good. I jump up and leave my coffee on the table. Not to mention I'm also late for the experiment with Xephos! I grab the file and run out. 

My feet squeak against the tile floor as I run past everyone fleeing. Right, left, left right, straight, oh shit! Where to now?! I stop and look around the empty hall. My hands search through my pockets as I try to locate where I put my map. "On your left!" A high voice yells out to me. The impact took the air out of my lungs as I fell on the floor. "Great. Bloody hell, look where you're going next time!" I look up into her brown eyes- no wait, eye. BEEP BEEP. We both look down as we hear our timers go off. "No fucking way." I look back up at her to assess what she looked like. She was in an oriental cheongsam that was covered in purple goop. Her face and arms were being taken over by the swirling violet tendrils that were creeping across. She was beautiful, a monster mixed with elegance. "Well... um. Uh.." I burble out. A blush started to creep across my face. "Wow," she snorted. "You must be popular with the ladies." 

"Oy! I'm popular!" 

"Sure, sure." she snickered.

"Wait a minute..." I think for a moment. "You must be 1337!"

"Yep. I'm 1337, also known as Nanosounds. But since you're my soulmate and all, you can call me Nano." 

God her smile is adorable.

"Well, my name is Lalna. Just, Lalna."

"Well, 'Just Lalna-'"

"LALNA GET AWAY FROM HER" I look down the hall and see Xephos looking frantic. 

"She's dangerous! And contaminated! Capture her!" I glance at Xephos, then back at Nano. 

"C'mon, you're no going to turn me in. Are you?" Nano glanced at me and I knew the answer.

"Sorry, mate. But I have to. For science." I lift the small girl onto my shoulders and glance back at Xephos "Maybe next time. But for now, consider this my official resignation." Then I run. Run as fast as I can, out of the lab. With my new best friend bouncing and laughing on my shoulders.

Wow. I apologize for that boring story. I just wanted to get started so I can set my real one-shots in motion. *cue evil cackle* (I do love my angst fics) But anyway, I promise these will get better. Thanks for reading!
