Jaemin strolled down the quiet college campus pathway, the soft rustle of leaves whispering secrets in the autumn breeze. His mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, juggling deadlines and daydreams, when he spotted a figure in the distance. The man was tall, with broad shoulders that seemed to carry the weight of the world, yet his gait was surprisingly graceful, almost ethereal. As he drew closer, Jaemin's heart skipped a beat. It was Jeno, his ex-boyfriend from what felt like a lifetime ago.
The memory of their love was as vivid as the crimson leaves that painted the landscape around them. Their relationship had been a secret garden, a sanctuary where they could be themselves amidst the sound of college life. But like the season itself, it had ended abruptly, leaving only the skeletal branches of what once was. Jeno had left for family obligations, and Jaemin had chosen to pursue his studies, promising to wait.
Three years had passed since they'd last seen each other. The promise of forever had withered away like the leaves beneath their feet. Jaemin had moved on, or so he told himself. Yet, here he was, his heart racing as if no time had elapsed. He quickened his pace, eager to avoid the impromptu reunion, but Jeno's gaze locked onto him like a homing beacon.
As they approached, Jeno's eyes searched Jaemin's, and for a brief moment, the world around them faded. There was no one else but the two of them, standing in the shadow of the ivy-covered buildings that had once been their playground. The air grew thick with unspoken words and unresolved feelings. The silence was deafening, filled with the echoes of their past laughter and the ghosts of their unshed tears.
Jaemin's hand trembled slightly as he clutched the strap of his backpack, his thoughts racing. He knew he couldn't ignore Jeno. But what could he say? How could he explain the ache that still lingered in his heart, the emptiness that no one else had managed to fill? He took a deep breath, bracing himself for the storm that was about to come. Little did he know, the real surprise was waiting just around the corner.
As they stopped in front of each other, Jeno's eyes drifted to the tiny figure holding onto Jaemin's hand. A boy, no more than two years old, looked up at Jeno with curiosity and a hint of shyness. His dark hair was a mess of unruly curls, and his eyes sparkled with innocence. But it was his features that made Jeno's heart stop. The little boy was the spitting image of him.
Jeno's eyes widened in shock. "Jaemin," he said, his voice a hoarse whisper, "who is this?"
Jaemin's cheeks flushed as he looked down at Jisung, the child's tiny hand clutching his finger. He swallowed hard, trying to formulate a lie that wouldn't crumble under Jeno's intense scrutiny. "This is...my nephew," he finally managed to say, his voice shaking slightly. "I'm just watching him for my sister."
Jeno studied the boy, his gaze piercing through Jaemin's attempt at a cover-up. "He looks nothing like your family," he said, his voice laced with accusation. "Is he...mine?"
Jaemin's heart sank. He hadn't expected Jeno to recognize the resemblance so quickly. He took a step back, pulling Jisung closer to his side. "No, no," he stuttered, "that's impossible. We broke up before..."
