I love you, Tillie.
I love you, Tillie.
Nate missed those words. She never felt like she had ever questioned Julian, how he could love her so easily. Julian was still a teenager when they last met before he went to college. Could Nate believe that he wasn't tempted by other girls at such a young age?
Nate laid on the edge of her bed, looking out of her bedroom window. The rain had stopped, and the cold was still piercing even though Nate had put on her blanket.
Nate reached for her phone. It was past midnight. Her body and mind felt tired, but she was still wide-awake. Nate looked at her phone, wondering what Julian was doing. She sent him a text asking if he was really okay, but there was no reply.
The next second she knew, her phone screen showed an outgoing call to Julian's number. Nate just stared at it, not expecting anything because maybe Julian was already , or he didn't give a hoot to her call. However, as if her body got electric shock as she saw the timer running, Nate immediately put her phone to her ear.
"Julian?" called Nate gently.
"Hm," replied Julian.
"Are you asleep?" asked Nate.
"I woke up because of your call."
"I'm sorry. I just... you didn't reply to my messages. I was worried about you."
Julian sighed. "I thought you said you would stop contacting me. I knew this would happen, that's why I never replied to your message. Because if I do it once, you will continue to expect me to reply to it every time you send me a message."
Nate knew Julian had never been sweet-tongued with her, but it still hurt to hear him be blunt like this.
"Why did you marry me?" Nate finally asked.
Julian sighed again. "Not this question again..."
"Why? Because you can't give me a real answer?"
"Didn't I already answer to that the first time you asked?"
"Yeah, you said it was because you loved me. But how could that be? You left after asking me to wait for you. Then, you disappeared for ten years without ever visiting me, or talking to me, even on the phone. Do you want me to believe that you really love me? How could you fall in love with me that easily without seeing me or talking to me for ten years?"
"That's because you don't know what I've been through in those ten years."
"I know many girls had a crush on you, and your friends were also trying to set you up with them. So, I really can't find a reason, why you should rejected all those girls for me. There are many girls out there who are better than me. Even Mum said that she actually wanted you to marry Annie. Why should it be me?"
"Because it's you." Julian replied in a trembling voice. "I told you, I only wanna be with you."
Nate was silent for a moment when she heard Julian's reply. "I still don't understand. If you really wanted me, then why did you gave me a cold shoulder after we got married?" she asked. "Were you disappointed after finding out that I was not what you expected? Maybe for you, I was not a good listener, that's why you never shared your stories with me. I'm not good at cooking, so I'm nothing compared to Sophie. I'm not as pretty as Rachel either. What can you be proud of about me? Especially after I had an affair with another man, you felt that it was an opportunity for you to get away from me, right?"
"It's not the time to talk about that."
"It's because I don't know when will I have the chance to talk to you again. I'm not sure if you'll still listen to me."
