The sterile, bright lights of the emergency room seemed to intensify the gravity of the situation. Sanjana stood in the corner, her face pale and her eyes red from crying. The paramedics had rushed Dev into the operating room, and now, hours later, the hallway was filled with anxious whispers and the occasional sound of hurried footsteps.
Dr. Malik, the lead surgeon, emerged from the operating room, his face set in a grim expression. He approached Sanjana, who was clinging to a tattered hope as she watched him.
“Ms. Sanjana,” Dr. Malik began, his voice steady but grave. “Dev has lost a significant amount of blood and his kidneys are severely damaged. He needs a kidney transplant to have any chance of surviving.”
Sanjana’s heart dropped at the words. “A kidney transplant?” she echoed, her voice barely more than a whisper. “But—”
“Do you know if he has a compatible donor?” Dr. Malik interrupted gently. “We need to act fast. Time is of the essence.”
Sanjana’s mind raced, her breath coming in short, panicked bursts. She knew there were tests to determine compatibility, but she was desperate. “I—” Her voice faltered as she looked at the doctor, her fear and regret overwhelming her. “I don’t know. I mean… I haven’t checked. But I—”
“Ms. Sanjana, are you a blood relative?” Dr. Malik pressed, his eyes searching hers. “Sometimes, immediate family members can be tested for compatibility quickly.”
“No,” Sanjana said, shaking her head, tears streaming down her face. “I’m not. I don’t have any close family here… but I’m—” Her voice broke, and she fought to steady herself. “I’m willing to do anything. I’d even donate if I could.”
Dr. Malik’s gaze softened, though the urgency remained. “We’ll need to perform immediate tests to determine if you’re a match. I understand the emotional toll this is taking on you, but Dev’s condition is critical. Every minute counts.”
Sanjana nodded, her resolve hardening despite her fear. “Please, do the tests. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
A nurse led Sanjana to a nearby room where the necessary tests were conducted. She felt a mix of dread and hope as the minutes ticked by, each second stretching into what felt like an eternity. As she waited, she replayed every moment of that fateful night in her mind, the consequences of her actions weighing heavily on her.
After what felt like hours, Dr. Malik returned with the results. “Ms. Sanjana,” he said, his tone a blend of cautious optimism, “the tests show that you are indeed a match. We can proceed with the transplant, but we need to act quickly.”
Sanjana’s tears flowed freely, a mix of relief and overwhelming sorrow. “Thank you,” she managed to say, her voice choked with emotion. “Please, save him.”
Dr. Malik nodded and guided her towards a pre-operative area where preparations for the surgery began. As she was prepped for the procedure, Sanjana’s mind was a whirlwind of fear, guilt, and a desperate hope that this final act could somehow atone for the pain she had caused.
In the operating room, Dev was unconscious, the beeping of machines a constant reminder of his fragile state. Sanjana’s final thoughts before the anesthesia took hold were a silent plea for forgiveness and a wish for Dev’s recovery. She knew that this was a long shot, but it was a chance she had to take.
As darkness claimed her consciousness, Sanjana could only hope that this sacrifice would lead to a new beginning, a chance for Dev to heal and for both of them to find a way through the shattered remnants of their past
