The late afternoon sun streamed through Y/N's window, casting a warm, golden glow over her room. She sat at her desk, scrolling through her phone with a distracted air, her mind still occupied by the strange events of earlier.

The rune-like mark on her chest had nearly vanished, leaving no trace of its existence—almost as if it had been a figment of her imagination.

The familiar buzz of her phone jolted her back to reality, and a smile broke across her face when she saw Lilith's name on the screen. Without a moment's hesitation, Y/N tapped to answer the video call, eager for the comforting presence of her friend.

"Hey, birthday girl!" Lilith's cheerful voice rang out as her face appeared on the screen, her wide grin immediately infectious.

Her auburn hair was pulled into a messy bun, with loose strands framing her lively green eyes. Behind her, the familiar sight of her bedroom—with its poster of an obscure indie band—made Y/N feel instantly at ease.

Lilith had come into Y/N's life at the start of her junior year in high school, right when everything seemed to be shifting around her. Despite Y/N's reserved nature, they had clicked instantly.

Lilith's outgoing personality had been the perfect balance to Y/N's thoughtful, introspective demeanor. Over the past two years, Lilith had drawn her out of her shell, encouraged her to take chances, and had become her closest friend—someone Y/N could always rely on.

"Hey!" Y/N replied, leaning back in her chair. "Where've you been? I was starting to think you ditched me."

"Not a chance," Lilith scoffed, playfully rolling her eyes. "I've been busy working on your surprise."

As they exchanged smiles, Y/N noticed a subtle movement in the background—a flutter of black feathers.

Perched on a wooden stand near Lilith's window was Huginn, her raven, his sharp, pale silver eyes fixed on the screen. The bird's glossy feathers caught the light, giving him an almost regal appearance as he observed their conversation.

*

Y/N couldn't help but recall the first time she had visited Lilith's house when Lilith had introduced her to Huginn. The raven had always been an enigmatic presence, often watching them with an eerie calm, as if he understood far more than a bird should.

"This is Huginn," Lilith had said with a smile, casually stroking the raven's beak. "He's been with me since I was a kid. I kept him because he was blind, poor thing."

Y/N had nodded, but something about Huginn's piercing, almost luminous eyes had unsettled her. The raven's gaze seemed too focused, too knowing, for a bird that was supposed to be blind.

Over time, she grew accustomed to his presence, yet she could never quite shake the feeling that Huginn was watching her, seeing far more than he let on.

Now, as those pale silver eyes locked onto her once more, Y/N felt a faint shiver run down her spine. Huginn's stare was intense, almost as if he could see straight through her, despite what Lilith had said.

She quickly shook off the sensation, attributing it to her overactive imagination, but the unease lingered.

"Surprise?" Y/N asked, trying to ignore the weight of Huginn's gaze. "Spill the details."

Lilith winked, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "You'll just have to wait and see."

"Come on, don't keep me hanging," Y/N urged, her voice tinged with playful impatience.

"Patience," Lilith teased, her grin widening. "Good things come to those who wait."
