It took a second for Kat's thoughts to rationalise the sound of pounding against their door, her arms tightening around Bucky's shoulders as the rest of her body froze.

It had to be a neighbour or something, people couldn't just walk into the building. That was what she told herself as Bucky's frame straightened from where he had been leaning against her. Neither of them had to motion further than meeting each other's eyes, they both knew not to make a sound.

The pounding came again, this time with a shout.

"Katrina Ivanov?"

Squeezing her eyes shut at male voice calling her name, she resisted the urge to groan. She had been right about the interview changing everything. The camera crew had to have followed her, she hadn't changed her route in her rush to get back to the safety of the apartment – they'd probably sold that information to every news channel in New York by now, of course the press would find her. If they just kept quiet they might give up-

"Katrina Ivanov, we have a warrant for your arrest, open this door now."

Shit. Not the press.

Bucky's hand grasped for her wrist as she sat up, his eyes widening slightly as he processed the demand in the same second she did – and then his eyes darted to the window.

Run. That was what their instincts screamed. It had been what they had always done.

But she couldn't, Kat realised as her heart thudded against her ribcage like a bass drum. That wasn't part of the deal she had made when she was pardoned. If she didn't comply now, she'd spend the rest of her life running. But Bucky... Looking at the man she loved as he silently rose to his feet, she felt her gut twist at the thought of what they would do to him. The Winter Soldier was still wanted in every nation on the planet, and that would be who they saw. Not Bucky Barnes.

Catching his hand, she shook her head urgently as he lurched towards the bedroom where their backpacks still sat, ready to go. Old habits died hard.

"Katrina Ivanov-"

"Just a second-" Biting out her response, she hoped it sounded like she had just woken up, like she was taking her time in answering the door. She didn't miss the way Bucky looked at her in alarm. "I can't." She hissed softly, bending to scramble through the mess of clothes they had left by the couch in the search for something that wouldn't leave her being arrested in what would look like a perverse Winnie the Pooh cosplay. Tugging on her jeans over her bare legs once she gave up on finding her underwear, she nodded to the window, "You go, I can figure this out."

"You have ten seconds-"

"I said give me a second!" She turned to yell at the voice beyond the door, trying to process the conflicting fear rising in her chest like a burning wave, her thoughts tripping over themselves as she tried to make sense of the handbrake turn her conversation with Bucky had taken into this sudden panic. "Buck, you've gotta-"
