A little while later, Violet visited the church to light a candle for Edmund. She was waiting to see if the baby would be born that day. But she wanted to celebrate her late husband's birthday since it was a hard day for her. Edmund was the love of her life. She wished to cherish every memory she had with him for a quiet moment at the church.
"Lady Danbury." She smiled but was surprised to see Lady Danbury, who was also at the church.
"Viscountess Bridgerton." Lady Danbury smiled as she walked over to her.
"How lovely to see you here..." Violet smiled at her, walking away from the display of candles.
"Lovely, possibly. Unexpected, definitely. I heard you might be welcoming a new grandchild today." She smiled at Violet.
"Well, I suppose unexpected is accurate. It is my husband's birthday today." Violet smiled sorrowfully.
"Ah..."
"Was. Would be. Would have been." She stammered a bit as her voice cracked while she tried not to cry. "Edmund's birthday would've been today. I'm so sorry..." She sighed as she could not fight back the tears.
"Why are you sorry?" Lady Danbury asked her with a sympathetic sigh.
"He liked his birthday." Violet chuckled softly through the tears. "He liked to celebrate, and I would make him hats. Out of paper. The kind of hats that had been made for me when I was a child. My father made me these birthday hats, and no one had ever done that for him, so I did it. I gave him childish birthdays, and... they made him so happy. I constructed these... oh, elaborate, wonderful hats, and he would wear them the entire day." Violet chuckled softly as she smiled at the memories. "He looked ridiculous in them. And we would laugh..." She stopped as she felt herself about to cry. "I do not like today." She sighed a bit, looking down at her tissue. It reminds me that there are no hats to make." She sighed, keeping her eyes down.
"You are most fortunate." Lady Danbury said, making Violet jerk her head up to look at her.
"Fortunate?" Violet asked, thinking she had misheard Lady Danbury.
"Yes."
"I fear I must have misheard you." Violet stuttered, looking very confused. "I am... I am fortunate?" She asked her again.
"You may not like today. But trust me. You are most fortunate." Lady Danbury smiled before leaving Violet confused and unsure what to do.
The Bridgerton estate.
Eloise stood in the doorway of Anthony and Evelina's room. She stayed quiet as Francesca came up behind her. Eloise glanced back at Francesca, then back at Evelina, who was stuck in bed, wincing from the pain she was feeling every so often.
"You can come into the room," Evelina said, trying to sit up as she saw the two girls by the door.
"No baby yet?" Francesca asked, walking over to the bed to pick up Evelina's tea cup while Eloise remained at the door.
"No baby... yet." Evelina sighed. "Thank you." She smiled, thanking Francesca for helping her.
"Is it painful?" Eloise finally asked, making the two of them look over.
"So far..." Evelina sighed, being truthful. "I have this awful pain below my stomach. It comes and goes, and my back... hurts." Evelina sighed when Eloise hesitantly nodded.
"Is childbirth supposed to be painful?" Francesca asked with a worried look.
"According to my mother, it is the worst pain imaginable..."
"Do you not remember Mama's screams the night Hyacinth was born?" Eloise asked with a slight scoff. "It felt like the windows rattled..." She sighed, looking down at the ground.
"El..." Evelina reached her hand out for Eloise to come closer as Francesca moved to sit on the edge of the bed. "From what I've been told... and have been experiencing... it is painful. And scary. But... It's like second nature. Our bodies were made to do this. Bring life into the world." Evelina smiled as Eloise and Francesca looked hesitant.
"Does not make it less scary..." Eloise sighed.
"True... But that does not mean that we should be afraid of the things that scare us. We must overcome our fears." Evelina gave her a small smile.
"Easier to say than do..."
"I know." Evelina sighed when the room went quiet for a moment. "I am experiencing that... right now." Evelina groaned in pain when Eloise looked mortified.
"Eloise... Get the cloth." Francesca said as Eloise stayed frozen.
"It's alright..." Evelina panted. "The pain has passed for now..." She panted, trying her best to sit up as she hoped she would feel relief if she moved.
"Looks like you're enjoying this," Eloise said sarcastically, passing the cloth to Francesca who moved to wipe Evelina's head.
"Oh... Best time of my life." Evelina panted, looking down at her baby bump, thinking that this child was going to make it very hard on their mother.
Eloise and Francesca chuckled a bit when Evelina reached Francesca for the cup to sit back on the nightstand.
"Would you care to read me a story, El? Perhaps distract me for a bit..." Evelina suggested, motioning to the dresser that had a tall stack of books.
"Perhaps she might read you the Lady Whistledown that Mother was reading earlier," Francesca spoke up as Evelina and Eloise tensed up at the mention of the scandal sheet.
"Not a chance." Eloise scoffed to herself, crossing her arms over her chest.
"I see we share the same distaste for that horrible scribbler..." Evelina said, wincing at the pain she felt from the baby.
"That is one way to put it." Eloise sighed, glancing over to the dresser where the books were.
