The first light of dawn crept through the window of the inn, its gentle glow visible across the room where Alaric prepared for his departure. The soft rays illuminated the items on the worn wooden table -- maps, scrolls and vials, each meticulously packed into a well traveled satchel. His movements were deliberate with some urgency to it. Alaric paused for a moment, his gaze drifting to the seldom peaceful Eldra who layed recovering in the adjacent room. The sight of her restful slumber offered him a sense of calm before the road beckoned him. He looked back onto the wooden table, a photograph oh him and his beloved in his hands, "I could take all the help I could get my love, I wish you were with me. Your prescence is needed evermore." he thought to himself, tears filling his eyes.
Kaizen entered the room, his footsteps soft on the wooden floor. The early hour left him looking slightly disheveled, but his eyes were clear. "Father," he said his voice breaking the silence, "is everything ready?"
Alaric looked up, his expression filled with warmth and weariness. "Nearly. I'm just finishing up. I wanted to say goodbye before I leave."
Kaizen approached, his gaze falling on the packed satchel. "Be safe out there Father. I'll keep Eldras' spirits up."
Alaric nodded gratuitously, a faint smile touching his lips reassuring his son. "I have no doubt you will."
With one last look at Kaizen, Alaric turned to the adjoining room, Eldra layed in the deep, restorative sleep, her breathing steady and calm. Alaric approached her bedside with a quiet reverence, gently adjusting the blankets to ensure her comfort. He placed a small, enchanted charm on the nightstand -- a symbol of his hope for her swift recovery and protection. He whispered softly, as if to reassure both Eldra and himself, "Rest well my child, regain your strength."
Feeling a renewed sense of purpose, Alaric turned to Kaizen. His eyes conveying a final message of confidence and promise of his return. "Take care of each other. I'll be back as soon as I can."
Kaizen stood in the doorway, fixed on his father as he made his way to the inn's entrance. The morrning light painted Alaric's silhouette with a hopeful glow, adding a sense of warmth to his departure. With a deep breath, Alaric stepped out into the crisp morning air, his figure gradually fading into the distance.
As the door closed softly behind him, Kaizen remained in the doorway, absorbing the quiet and the ernormity of his father's absence. The village was just beginning to stir, its tranquility a vast contrast to the uncertainty that loomed.
Turning his attention back to Eldra, he felt the weight of responsibility settle on his shoulders. With the promise of his father's return and his own resolve to support Eldra, Kaizen prepared himself for the days ahead.
*****
Four days had passed since Alaric's departure and the events that caused a disturbance in Elkwood Willow. The village outside the inn had resumed back to its usual place, though a subtle tension hung in the air.
Inside the inn, Kaizen had settled into a routine, balancing his time between tending to Eldra and managing the daily affairs of the inn. The days were filled with a mix of quiet vigilance and routine chores, but each night, he found himself restless, unable to escape the looming shadow of his father's expedition.
Eldra's condition had improved slightly. The fever that had gripped her from her wounds intially had subsided, and her breathing steadied, though she remained unconscious. Kaizen spent hours at her bedside, talking to her softly, hoping that his words might reach her in some way. Despite the progress, there were moments of anxiety when he would check her pulse and her temperature, always finding himself wishing for more visible signs of recovery
